On May 12th, TSM will face off against G2 in the Group Stage of the 2017 Mid-Season Invitational, held at São Paulo, Brazil. As the respective powerhouses of North America and Europe, the two teams will clash for the first time in the MSI.

Both NA and EU regions have alternated in providing good performances in recent international events. NA’s CLG advanced to last year’s MSI grand finals and challenged SKT T1. In the 2016 Worlds, Europe’s H2K became the only non-Korean semifinalist. Despite losing to Korean teams, NA and EU teams have proved themselves to the rest of the world.

However, TSM and G2 haven’t shown a clear edge on a world stage for quite some time. Although they took home numerous trophies from their regional leagues, they were knocked out in group stages of international events. Things were not looking up for the number one NA and EU LCS teams. Compared to CLG and H2K, which narrowly made it to the world stage, TSM and G2 were clearly dissatisfied with their polarizing results.

In the competitive sphere, victory is required to set the record straight. Only with convincing wins can the NA and EU leagues prove their worth. Since both teams are based in the West, neither one wants to be the lesser league. It goes without saying that each team will be hell-bent on coming out on top as the true representative LCS team.

Currently, momentum is better for G2. After starting off the tournament with a loss to Gigabyte Marines, TSM lost again the next day, which placed them at the bottom. On the other hand, G2 is in second place with Flash Wolves and Team WE with a 2-2 record. Since G2 is in second place with two other teams, they’ll do everything in their power to secure additional wins and advance higher. The same can be said for TSM, as they could be in the same standing as G2 if they win the upcoming match.

Only time will tell which team will truly represent LCS. With the weight of an entire region on their shoulders, both TSM and G2 see this match as one they cannot lose. As Day 3 arrives, fans are anxious to see which region will lay claim to victory.
