The Florida Mayhem announced Sunday afternoon that Jun-Soo "Kris" CHoi, Sang-Bum "BQB" Lee, and Sang-Won "Swon" Yoon will be joining the team's 2019 Overwatch League roster. The players are currently pending approval from the Overwatch League.
Kris is a support player who previously represented Meta Athena in Korean Contenders and Contenders Trials, while BQB is a DPS player who was a part of the X-6 Gaming roster that recently won Korean Contenders 2018 Season 2. Swon, a tank player, previously competed for NRG Esports, the San Francisco Shock's North American Contenders team.
This announcement adds fuel to months of speculation that Florida Mayhem, who released six of their players on September 5th, would be recruiting a full Korean roster for 2019. Ben Spoont, the founder and CEO of both Misfits and Mayhem, denied these rumors last month, saying Mayhem "will not be fielding an all KR roster."
Mayhem have since promoted Hyeon-woo "HaGoPeun" Jo from their Academy roster to their Overwatch League roster, and Damon “Apply” Conti has become one of the League's first to accept a two-way contract between the team's Academy and League rosters. Scott “BEARHANDS” Tester was also announced as the team's new Assistant General Manager and Head of Scouting.
The Overwatch League team's 2019 roster was, according to Spoont, determined following a month of trials featuring players from North America, Europe, and South Korea. "For the month of August, we ran trials in NA/EU/KR with over 50 players including every single S1 Mayhem player. No job was safe and everyone competed," he tweeted in September.
Similarly, Ronald "Renanthera" Ly, previously a coach for Mayhem Academy, tweeted following today's announcements: "Before anyone says it, no, the [Florida Mayhem] aren’t going all Korean. Both Kris and Swon have superb english, every player joining will be expected to be just as proficient. They’re building a roster of international talent capable of winning."
In the League's inaugural season, the Florida Mayhem finished 11th out of 12 teams in the regular season, ultimately winning a mere seven matches and losing a whopping 33.
