The Overwatch World Cup Korean team made a 2-win streak. Although the team couldn’t claim the perfect victory without a single loss, they managed to reclaim the throne once again with their distinct potential at every crisis. Some fans were worried about the team not being able to adapt themselves to the new patch, and anxiety grew larger as they had a first set loss in the World Cup against the US. However, they concluded the league by winning all matches in Day 2 of the Overwatch World Cup and wiped out their fans’ apprehension.
Here’s the text of a group interview in the press room with the Overwatch World Cup Korean team who showed bold talk and tremendous confidence.
Q. Congratulations on the second victory. Wasn’t there any difficulty to claim the final victory of the Overwatch World Cup 2017?
Jehong “ryujehong” Ryu: Though I had different teammates, we used to play the game on the same server, so we didn’t have a major problem. But, I often had some time when I couldn’t order because the guy is in a different team.
Q. You gave away one set to Canada. How did you change the strategy after the defeat of one set?
Dongkyu “Mano” Kim: We couldn’t deal with the enemy team’s composition in the Junkertown, and we also had a few conflicts as to our composition. We then changed to the defence comp as the dive comp was prevented, and it worked quite well. Of course, Canada’s strategy was good.
Q. The enemy players were surprised with Fl0w3R’s Widowmaker. How did other teammates help Fl0w3R at the time?
Yeonoh “Fl0w3R” Hwang: All of my teammates helped me stay away from opponents. That gave me a good opportunity to deal damage easily. All I had to do was just deal damage without anything else.
Q. Was there any other fun experience besides the BlizzCon itself?
Junhyeok “zunba” Kim: There was a Korean restaurant right in front of our accommodation. It was really good to have Korean foods in a foreign country.
Q. When was the most difficult time during this World Cup?
Jongryul “Saebyeolbe” Park: There was nothing difficult today as we won all matches. However, the US’s teamplay in the quarterfinals yesterday was quite difficult. If we couldn’t get the atmosphere back on our side in Hanamura, we wouldn’t be certain of our victory.
Q. The Overwatch League is just a few more weeks to go. Is there anything you are concerned about competing against other teams?
Saebyeolbe: There will be many hidden masters. I’m looking forward to it with a better stadium, environment, and players.
Q. Korean players are showing off their potential in the Overwatch World Cup. Do you think that teams with Korean players will dominate the league?
Saebyeolbe: Yes, all global teams will need a Korean eventually.
Q. Tell us if there was any notable foreign player in this Overwatch World Cup.
zunba: US’s Jake in quarterfinals was really good. I think that his Junkrat, in particular, gave us lots of troubles.
Fl0w3R: AKM-UNKOE are really the players with a talent. I would love to play with them when I have a chance.
Q. What do you think is the reason that Korean players are superior to foreign players?
Jinmo “tobi” Yang: Korean teams have an extremely active league. The path from Challengers to APEX is very competitive, and having too many matches in a short time drove them to have a calculated and meticulous strategy.
Q. It seemed that Korean teams struggled to some extent due to the recent patch applied before the World Cup.
tobi: Because of the meta change, Mercy and Zenyatta instead of Lucio and Zenyatta became the core pick. We had Orisa and Roadhog as tanks more often in matches as well. It was quite difficult to adapt ourselves to the new one as we had to practice a way different from what we’ve been doing. Although I have confidence in playing other heroes, it’s not the case with Mercy and I guess that I showed a somewhat disappointing result in the World Cup. I’ll do my best to do much better next time.
