If you aren't keeping up with Overwatch contenders, don't worry, we have you covered. Each weekend, we provide a full recap of the event and, so far, the team to watch has been EnVision.
During week one, EnVision caused a major upset by defeating Rogue 3-1. During week two, they thrilled audiences again, this time defeating Immortals 3-1. The victory was a heroic one for EnVision, as they had widely been considered an underdog team going into Contenders:
"EnVision Esports have claimed the eighth spot in North America, that’s nothing new by now, but what can they do with this opportunity?
With such little practice with their new main-tank and a performance that had them dropping in the first round of the playoffs in Season Zero, my hopes aren’t particularly high for EnVision."
-Joe "Storm" Nowasell, OWC S1: Predictions for North America
These types of predictions were a fair assessment of EnVision's chances and it was generally accepted that it was going to be a challenging season for the team. However, judging by the comms during the final moments of their latest upset, their underdog status might be the exact thing that is fueling such incredible play.
Volume warning to headphone users:
"Two weeks in a row! Sleep on us, @#$!ing sleep on us! Keep $#@!ing doing it!"
This is the rallying cry of a team that relishes in their defiant victories. Beating teams that are considered "the best in the region" must be an intoxicating feeling, especially when every time it happens, the dream of becoming an esports success starts looking like a reality.
The loudest voice in these comms is none other than Caleb “McGravy” McGarvey. McGravy brings an incredible amount of energy to the team and you can bet that, whenever EnVision takes a big win, he will be literally screaming at the top of his lungs.
Just take a look at his reaction when EnVision initially qualified for Overwatch Contenders. Once again, volume warning for headphone users:
We spoke with McGravy a week prior about his teams incredible upset over Rogue, but the victory was overshadowed by the news of Christopher “ChrisTFer” Graham leaving the EnVision roster. There is no question that ChisTFer was a positive influence on the team, and many people attributed his leadership in making the upset against Rogue possible.
But this latest victory shows that the momentum EnVision has built isn't going anywhere. In fact, McGravy foreshadowed their victory against Immortals rather appropriately:
"Immortals is easily one of the best teams in North America. They have some of the best infrastructure and players in the scene right now. It's gonna be a tough match for sure. All I can ask for myself and the team is to put in the work to make the match as close as possible. If we bring the energy we did from last week, anything is possible.”
They clearly brought the energy from last week and it, once again, propelled EnVision to heights no one thought they could reach.
