APEX is a premiere Overwatch League where the best teams in the world compete. Elite Overwatch teams like KongDoo Panthera, Lunatic-Hai, Meta Athena, and Afreeca Freecs sharpen their skills throughout APEX, and the resulting expertise has traditionally been something that western teams have struggled to compete against.
Need a visual of said expertise? Check out our favorite clips from this week's matches and prepare to have your mind blown.
1. Is SayaPlayer even human?
This widowmaker headshot stuns the opposing team, and for good reason. These types of play are only possible when the combination of map awareness, preparedness, prediction, and mechanical skill all come together to make an Overwatch player look untouchable. Saki has every right to feel stunned after getting obliterated by this headshot.
2. THIS is how you Sombra.
There is sometimes some confusion about how to correctly play Sombra. Do you hack health packs all day? Do you farm your ultimate and try to counter Lucio ultimate? Do you protect against diving Doomfist? Esca from Lunatic-Hai does all of those things throughout this match, but this play, in particular, reminds us that sometimes a little sneakiness goes a long way.
This looks like someone took a bronze rank play and told a Korean pro to make it look good.
3. Doomfist dive is unstoppable.
Doomfist doesn't require incredibly intensive aim. Instead, the challenge comes from maximizing his mobility options and knowing when to go "all-in" with a dive. This play by Rascal is a fantastic initiation into 6 enemy Heroes that took full advantage of the cover his allies provided.
Note how Rascal goes straight to the back line once the enemy D.VA was distracted. Great Doomfist play!
4. Tracer re-enacts the ending of Space Jam
This mid-air pulse bomb is already making waves across the Overwatch community and for good reason. This incredibly clutch play seems overly flashy until you realize that it's something Libero looks for all the time. Visually, it is one of the coolest looking things Tracer is capable of doing, so hats off to Libero for pulling this off when the stakes are so high.
Psst... If you have a clip even half this cool, submit it to us and win our clip contest.
5. Doomfist is a problem.
Before Doomfist, Genji was the king of solo'ing entire teams. Times have changed and these tournament clips are becoming more and more common. Onefact makes this look easy and maybe the combination of Doomfist's personal shields and stray Lucio healing makes it so vs. Lunatic-Hai's low DPS team comp.
I for one, embrace our new Doomfist overlord.
6. Reaper, the death helicopter.
This climatic game win from MVP Space ended with an unusually mobile Death Blossom from Reaper. Lunatic-Hai tried their best to knock Reaper to somewhere safe, but it turns out that shotgun blasts hurt no-matter what direction they are coming from. It's good to see Reaper back in tournament play, especially when he is spinning through the air so gracefully.
7. Meteor Boop!
Doomfist has an incredibly powerful ultimate, but it can be difficult to land. Thankfully, GC Busan has team work on another level, including the tactical "Boop into Meteor Strike" to wipe the entire enemy team and win the series. If you watch closely, you can see Lucio boop that makes this play possible. Incredible teamwork on display!
If you are wondering why there are no western teams during this APEX, it is because tournament organizers decided to stop inviting them. Despite EnVyUs winning season 1 and their respectable performance against Korean teams (Rogue held their own as well), it looks like APEX will be an exclusively Korean event until noted otherwise.
Nevertheless, western audiences can enjoy these matches alongside English commentary at Twitch.tv/OGNglobal.
