Overwatch World Cup Group Stages Day 3 in Katowice, Poland has ended.
Korea dominated the Netherlands by 4-0 and successfully entered the Playoffs as No. 1 in Group E, followed by Netherlands as No. 2. Poland, with their home advantage, claimed a victory against Austria by 4:0. From Group F, Russia and Canada, both desperate to be No. 1 in the group, had a fierce battle with each other until overtime, and Canada eventually claimed the victory by 3-2. Turkey and Singapore reached a draw by 2-2 after intense battles.
In the 1st Match of Group E, Korea and the Netherlands fought for the No. 1 spot. During the 1st set, Korea brought out the combination of Reinhardt, Zarya, and Junkrat for defense, chose 3 tanks including Orisa for attack, and claimed a perfect victory in the King’s Row. Korea’s lead continued on to the 2nd set as well. Though the Netherlands used Pharmercy, which brought victory to the team in the first teamfight in Nepal, Korea reacted immediately and solidified their victory by claiming the Point.
The 3rd set was held in the Horizon Lunar Colony. Although Korea managed to stop the Netherlands from taking control of Point A, Korea faced the same situation of losing control of the Point due to the Genji plays from the Netherlands’ Vizility. However, Korea took advantage the Netherlands’ mistake at the very last minute of the round, and managed to claim victory after taking over Point A. Korea then easily claimed another victory against the Netherlands without losing any checkpoints in Route 66 in the 4th set.
The 2nd match of Group E was between Poland and Austria. The 1st set was held in King’s Row. Even though Matwoj’s Tracer and lkl’s Soldier: 76 of Austria showed great performances that pushed the payload quite quickly, Poland’s fierce resistance prevented Austria from reaching the last checkpoint. On the other hand, when it was Poland’s turn for the attack, Matth’s Pharah played impeccably and successfully managed to push the payload. Matth’s Pharah served her role quite well again in Lijiang Tower in the 2nd set. She harassed enemies from a distance and cleared them one by one while Kabaji’s Tracer disrupted Austria’s formation. In the end, Poland claimed another victory against Austria in the 2nd set again by pushing them out to the entrance.
Poland then brought out the composition of Pharmercy with Matth in the Horizon Lunar Colony in the 3rd set. Matth’s Pharah managed to land a triple kill via Barrage, penetrate Point A, and eventually took over Point B with 3 minutes left. When it was Austria’s turn for the attack, they desperately bombarded Poland and managed to successfully attack them with many ultimates. In overtime, both teams took over Point A, but Poland claimed victory in the 3rd set, as they had more Points than Austria in Point B.
The 4th set was held in Route 66. Poland did not miss their opportunity and vanquished Austria step by step. While their defeat was quite evident, Austria's Kabaji fought by repeatedly using Blink and Recall in the middle of Poland’s group in order to delay the payload. Even so, the payload arrived at the last checkpoint, and when it was Poland’s turn for defense, they interrupted Austria’s payload at the checkpoint. As a result, Poland dominated Austria by 4-0 and claimed one victory in the World Cup.
The 1st match of Group F was held between Russia and Canada. The 1st set was in Hollywood. Russia brought out an aggressive meta with ShadowBurn’s Genji as usual, and Canada fought back with the same meta. Both teams successfully managed to push the payload to the last checkpoint amidst a barrage of ultimates. In overtime, Canada failed to push through Point A, while Russia took over Point A and pushed the payload up to the middle checkpoint thanks to ShadowBurn. As a result, Russia claimed victory in the 1st set.
The 2nd set was held in the Ruins of Ilios. Both teams brought out the charge meta including Genji and Winston again, but Russia managed to break the balance with Mistakes’s Tracer by taking out the enemy healer. Canada eventually gave up on D.Va and had Mangachu play Pharah as a result. Canada then bombarded Russia from the sky where the opponent couldn’t reach them, bringing the score to 1-1. In the last section, Lighthouse, Russia brought out Pharmercy, but Agilities’s Genji kept taking out Russia’s Mercy and brought Canada to victory.
The 3rd set was in the Horizon Lunar Colony. Though Russia quickly took over Point A, they failed to take over Point B after losing the teamfight near the Point. On the other hand, Canada showed up with Pharmercy again, quickly took over Point A, and earned a quick win by using all available ults during the teamfight near Point B. During the 4th set in Route 66, Canada used Pharmercy to push the payload as quickly as they could, but failed to reach the destination and ended up with 2 points. However, Russia managed to acquire 3 points and got an opportunity for overtime.
During the last overtime in Oasis, Canada came up with Pharmercy and got a start on the opposing team even though the battle was in the university section. Russia, beaten in the first teamfight, reacted with Pharmercy via ShadowBurn and Forask3n, but Canada took the 1st round by successfully resurrecting 4 teammates and dominating the sky. After taking the lead, Canada maintained its Pharmercy composition, and claimed victory 3-2.
The last match of the Qualifier was between Singapore and Turkey in the 2nd match of Group F. The 1st set was again King’s Row. Turkey succeeded in penetrating Singapore’s defense with Yaga’s Genji and H3X’s Tracer. Although Singapore fought fiercely with Jungeunji’s Hanzo, they continuously lost the fights right before the middle checkpoint. Turkey eventually won the teamfight by interrupting the payload, claiming the 1st set. In the 2nd set, Singapore started with Pharmercy and attempted to change the flow of the match. Turkey played the game with the same Pharmercy in response, but Singapore eventually won the fight after dominating the teamfight near the Control Center.
The 3rd set was held in the Horizon Lunar Colony. Though Yaga’s Genji and Edwin’s Winston of Turkey succeeded in pushing towards Point A, the progress towards Point B did not go well because of the misuse of ultimates. Both teams used up all of their ultimates, and Turkey finally managed to take over the Point with only about 3 minutes left. Singapore’s NeonTears chose Sombra, and pushed towards Point A while hacking nearby heal packs. They also succeeded in the attack by winning the teamfight at the Point B, resulting in overtime. Singapore used the composition of Mei and Reaper, successfully defended the Points, and also succeeded in the attack, winning them the set.
The last 4th set was in Route 66. Turkey went with Yaga’s Genji and H3X’s Soldier: 76 and advanced the payload while fighting against Singapore’s charge composition. The match continued to overtime, and in the end, they managed to push the payload to the last checkpoint after a couple of skirmishes. Turkey barely managed to defend Singapore’s final attack at the last checkpoint, bring the match to an end with a 2-2 score.
