Overwatch League might have to contest a different kind of objective against Major League Baseball in a legal battle
On July 17th, law firm Morrison Lee reported that MLB took issue with how Overwatch League's logo and requested more time to oppose the logo.
Through USPTO's website, Inven could confirm that the United States Patent and Trademark Office published Overwatch League's logo through The Official Gazette on March 28th, and it would have been fully approved if nobody filed for opposition in 30 days. However, Major League Baseball filed a Request For Extension of Time to File Opposition on April 27th, which was accepted on the same day and allowed MLB to take action until July 26th.
It would be hard-pressed to say that there are no similiarities. Overwatch League's logo, which is described as "curved corner rectangle... in two colors divided in the middle by a white silhouette of a person", shares a lot with that of MLB. However, the same can be applied to NBA and Major League Gaming, which even shares the color scheme and two words from its name. The fact that Overwatch and Baseball couldn't be any more different also applies.
Judging from other cases, it's unlikely that MLB's claim will cause Blizzard to change their logo for Overwatch League. However, if Trademark Trial and Appeal Board does reject Blizzard's trademark filing, we might see the logo being changed to something else.
