Overwatch League, the first major global professional esports league with city-based teams, is expected to kick off its inaugural season later this year. Among the first 7 founding teams, Seoul is one of the official franchise locations. Additionally, Korea is home to APEX, one of the longest-lasting premier Overwatch tournaments in the world. Many fans and players cast doubt on the future of APEX since the announcement.
When reached for comments, Blizzard stated that APEX will continue as it has done before. “APEX will have its own event, and so will OWL. We don’t currently have plans to stop APEX because of OWL,” a Blizzard spokesperson responded.
There’s no detailed information yet on how each league will coexist in what capacity since no specific plans such as format and dates have been revealed apart from a general overview. More announcements are soon to follow as OWL’s first season is slated to launch within the year.
