Riot Games Announces Physical Trading Card Game Project K Based on League of Legends

Riot Games has officially unveiled Project K, a new physical trading card game (TCG) set in the League of Legends universe. Announced on December 5, 2024, Project K marks Riot’s ambitious foray into the physical TCG genre, building on the success of its digital games. The game will initially launch in China in early 2025, with Riot Games still seeking global publishing partners to help expand the game’s reach to other regions.

Developed by a small but passionate team at Riot, Project K combines the world of League of Legends with the competitive mechanics of a traditional TCG. The game is designed to be played in-person with friends, offering a fresh, interactive experience that emphasizes strategy and community. With the goal of creating a thriving competitive ecosystem, Riot is taking careful steps to ensure the game’s success, including partnering with a local team in China for its debut.

Attendees at the upcoming Teamfight Tactics (TFT) Macao Open from December 13-15 will be among the first to experience Project K, as it will be available for hands-on play at the event. However, Riot has cautioned that the visual assets and cards shown in the announcement video are still in development and may change before the game’s official launch.

The TCG genre has seen significant growth in 2024, with games like Magic: The Gathering and Hearthstone continuing to dominate the market. With Project K, Riot aims to carve out its own space in this competitive landscape, leveraging its League of Legends IP to attract a global fanbase. The launch of Project K in China is expected to be a major step toward bringing the game to the world stage in the years to come.
