In a recent report by Dexerto's Richard Lewis, various talent from Overwatch League claimed they were expected to take pay cuts for the 2020 season. Additionally, Lewis reports that the Overwatch League has not yet finalized the travel requirements for their talent either, expecting them to sign contracts without finalized details that would dictate a large part of their lives.
We have already reported on the mass exodus of the Overwatch League broadcast team this off-season, and this report provides more clarity on why so many have left. Despite all the extra requirements for the team this upcoming season, they reported less authority in structuring their show and now pay cuts as well.
Some of the talent who spoke with Lewis stated they had faced pay cut expectations before, but former Overwatch League commisioner, Nate Nanzer, fought against that for them, ensuring they would not take reduced pay. However, upper members of the team claimed to forgo their salary increases after year one in order to allow for their coworkers on the lower end of the pay bracket to be properly compensated instead.
Read the full report from Lewis and Dexerto for more, but it's clear Overwatch League has not valued its talent as highly as they should in order to maintain its relevance and entertainment value. After the departure of Christopher "MonteCristo" Mykles early this year, several more have followed suit. Overwatch League has an exciting year ahead of them with the Homestand format, but they'll need talent to get them through it. Follow our Twitter below for more updates on OWL and esports.
