On the 18th of January, at the LoL Park, the 3rd day of the 2019 LCK Spring Split took place. The first series of the day featured SANDBOX Gaming and Gen.G Esports, in which SANDBOX Gaming took a convincing victory of 2-0. Throughout the series, Joker displayed near flawless teamwork with Ghost, making sure his duo partner stayed safe. As for Summit, he was a key component in SB's unique strategy in game 2, and his presence alone was a massive threat to the enemy team.
The following is an interview with Joker and Summit.
How do you feel about today’s victory?
Joker: We had good results during practice, so I was fully expecting our first game [here in the LCK] to go well.
Summit: It was my debut game here in the LCK. I was very nervous, but things went according to what we had prepared and planned.
At the KeSPA Cup, you lost to GEN 0-2, and the fans questioned SB’s performance. But with today’s game, you completely turned those opinions around.
Joker: At the time of the KeSPA Cup, we weren’t fully prepared, as we had just picked up new players for the roster. That’s why we played poorly; bringing upon negative opinions about us. Since today’s match was against Gen.G, we came today with revenge in mind; I think that’s why we worked extra hard.
How far do you believe SB will go this split?
Joker: Our goal at first was to qualify for the Spring Playoffs. But seeing how well practice/scrim is going for us, I’m aiming to place at least 3rd this split.
Summit, this was your first match after joining SANDBOX. Are you satisfied with your performance today?
Summit: My Urgot in game 1 was ‘okay’. In game 2 however, the game didn’t go as well as I had hoped. I feel I wasn’t able to show the fans much today.
In game 2, Summit swapped lanes with the mid laner. How did you prepare this strategy?
Summit: What you saw is just the tip of the iceberg. From our top laner to support, we can swap around any lane at will.
Joker: As we practice new champions with the other players’ champion pool in mind, our champion pool grew significantly in size.
Ghost wasn’t exactly seen as the best player last split. In addition, Joker is the oldest player here in the LCK. Many people were worried about the SANDBOX lineup in the beginning.
Joker: Our teamwork wasn’t exactly the best in the beginning. But as we continued to practice, we developed solid team synergy. Our bot lane duo is much stronger than what you think.
I was actually very disappointed [in us] with the KeSPA Cup. We could’ve shown far better performance… it was very regretful. After being eliminated at the KeSPA Cup, we made sure to sharpen our knives for the LCK.
My teammates heavily support me. They always have faith in me. And to tell you the truth, the negative opinions that others have of me actually motivate me. Great players receive harsh criticism when they underperform, whereas bad players receive high praise when they perform even slightly well. I want to continue to do well and show more to the fans.
Any last words?
Summit: We got new sponsors. Logitech is heavily supporting us. They’re a big source of motivation -- I’m very happy.
Joker: After the KeSPA Cup, I began reading a lot of comments about me and my team. It really hurt me. I feel that I could’ve done so much better. Please have faith in us and cheer for us. When reading those comments, I truly realized what it’s like to be a professional gamer. Please leave a lot of positive comments!
