Journeyman is a term metaphorically given to a player who moves from team to team constantly. It is easy to think that the reason why a player moves around so much is because of their lack of skill. However, a player cannot consistently move from team to team without a vast amount of talent to offer. Only when a player can consistently fill the void in a team and have his or her unique strengths, can a player be a Journeyman. In most cases, a Journeyman will have a substantial amount of talent alongside a hefty salary.

Despite all this, it is not an easy task to perform well whilst not only moving teams but also their most prefered region. An example of a Journeyman that obtained a great amount of success is Echo Fox’s Huni. While moving around Europe, Korea, and North America, Huni has consistently shown a good performance. However, a majority of players who move regions tend to experience setbacks and mistakes due to the inability to adapt with their team.

The long awaited mid laner for Flyquest, Fly, is a Journeyman. More so than other Journeymen, Fly seemed to have an extreme rollercoaster of a story. Debuting in Korea and playing for China’s Challenger teams. Being apart of the golden days of kt Rolster and the ultimate hardships with Longzhu Gaming. As if fleeing from his past, Fly came to NA’s Challenger series to only experience more hardship and failure. At the end of the ups and downs of his journey, Fly secured a spot in the NA LCS. Fly explains that he has learned an incredible amount from jumping from team to team.

“I moved teams almost every year. I even moved teams with not even a year in. However, I don’t regret that I moved from and to a lot of teams. The experience stacks up. Thinking about each individual team I have been with, I truly think I have learned a lot. Now I’ve learned to gain a broader perspective towards the problems I am experiencing with my team. I have also learned that a more direct method of approach is not necessarily good for me.”

Fly explains that leaving Gold Coin United to gain a spot in Flyquest was not as easy as it may have seemed. Fly claims that he originally wanted to return to the LCK but ultimately decided to go with Flyquest.

“The stress I received in Korea was too much. Because I can see what people think of me alongside the stories about me, I realized it was not healthy for me to focus too heavily on these comments. The reason why I wanted to play in NA was because of the language barrier. I really liked how the language barrier would prevent me from being influenced by the negative comments.

After Flyquest confirmed I was their mid laner, it was personally very difficult for me to perform on the stage again. Because of the visa issues, I had to go back and forth from Canada to Korea. I couldn’t even properly practice with my teammates. It worries me that I haven’t gotten much time to practice with my teammates.”

Experiencing a rather long journey, Fly explains that he no longer regrets his decisions. Although it was hard for him to watch his former team, Longzhu Gaming, do so well without him, Fly claims he is now focusing on the future rather than the past.

“Since a lot of time has passed, I don’t have the bundled up thoughts I once had for Longzhu Gaming anymore. Now I am more focused on my team’s performance and macro. At this moment, Flyquest has a lot of issues they need to fix. But the good thing is, we are constantly trying new things.

Although I have a fellow Korean, Flame, on my team, I believe it is much more important to focus on the synergy with the team as a whole. I have high expectations for my jungler. As long as I guide him, I think he is going to be extremely good.

I want to help the team understand how to go about the game and improve together. Because of all that I have experienced, I realized that I have truly gained a broad perspective. Now I tend to think about the game as a whole rather than tunneling only on my own lane.”

Fly realizes that his fans don’t have much expectations for him. However, Fly explains he will show his fans exactly what he is capable of. Up to this point, Fly joining Flyquest is his 7th journey. Not even Fly knows how this journey will end, with a happy ending or a sad one. We can only hope that the result will stem from not external factors but from his determination alone.

“Because of how people may think of me, I’m not sure if the Flyquest fans are going to expect much from me. However, I will try my utmost to make sure Flyquest improves. I can only hope that you believe and support in me.”
