In line with the 2021 League of Legends World Championship, Riot Games has announced they have collaborated with German automobile manufacturer Mercedes-Benz to create this year’s championship ring. The rings will be presented by Mercedes-Benz and Riot Games to the members of the team victorious at this year’s finals in Reykjavik, Iceland.
The move comes as no surprise, seeing as only one year ago Riot Games reached a partnership agreement with Mercedes-Benz, seeing the automobile company become the primary sponsor for trophy ceremonies and major international League of Legends events throughout the year. The move is not the first time that Riot Games has partnered with a major luxury brands, collaborating with companies such as Louis Vuitton, A Bathing Ape, and Uniqlo in the past.
The rings have been designed in an arrangement similar to the build of Riot Games’ iconic championship trophy, the Summoner’s Cup. With each ring crafted with 18-karat white gold and sapphire, it carries a similar color scheme to the famous trophy. Every ring will be custom-fitted for each team member and will include their player name and team name upon it.
According to Riot Games Global Head of LoL Esports Naz Aletaha, the rings will become a new tradition for the games’ competition:
“Championship rings are a storied tradition in sports, synonymous with the highest achievements and unmatched excellence [...] Since the start of our partnership in 2020, Mercedes-Benz has helped elevate and celebrate the best-of-the-best in LoL Esports, and we are thrilled to bring together our shared love for design and innovation to make a resounding mark on the crowning achievement of our sport.”
