Following their 1-3 exit out of the 2021 League of Legends World Championship, Unicorns of Love released a statement announcing that they will be allowing their entire roster to leave their contracts with the team, essentially releasing them into free agency.
“We accept the fact that players need constant development and, winning everything in the LCL for 3 years, it’s time to move to the next level — to try yourself in Europe — in EU Master and in LEC," UOL wrote.
Whether European organizations will pick up UOL’s former players — Vladislav "BOSS" Fomin, Kirill "AHaHaCiK" Skvortsov, Lev "Nomanz" Yakshin, Andrey "Argonavt" Yakovlev, and Aleksandr "SaNTaS" Lifashini — is yet to be seen. The team had many successful results domestically, with wins at every major LCL event in the past three years. Additionally, they received many individual accolades, with mid laner Nomanz most recently winning the LCL Summer 2021 MVP Awards for the regular season and finals.
At the same time, their international results have been disappointing. Though they were able to have some tournament impact this year, with their upset against Cloud9 allowing DetonatioN FocusMe to drop the NA team into the knockout stage, UOL usually has had very little impact on the world stage. In addition to their quick exit from Worlds this year, they have placed near the bottom in the last two iterations of Worlds, as well as this year’s MSI.
At this point, it seems there are no changes in the contracts of coaching staff pieces like Fabian “Sheepy” Mallant and Dmitrii “Invi” Protasov. When asked at Worlds about representing the LCL at Worlds, Sheepy stated in an interview with Gamelevate, “As long as I’m there, I will always do whatever is necessary and work as hard as I can to make my region proud and my team proud.”
