Unicorns of Love has been eliminated from the 2021 League of Legends World Championship. UOL won its last game in Group B of the Play-in in an upset over Cloud9, but met its end at the hands of Beyond Gaming in the subsequent tiebreaker.
Unicorns of Love came into the final day of the Play-in group stage 0-3 with the tall task of triumphing over the undefeated Cloud9 to force a tiebreaker, but only if Beyond Gaming first lost to DetonatioN FocusMe. Despite fulfilling both of these conditions, it was BYG who took the win over UOL in the tiebreaker and will move on to the next round of the Play-in.
Unicorns of Love is the second team to be eliminated from Worlds 2021 following the elimination of Latin America representative Infinity Esports, who went winless in its last place finish in Group A of the Play-in.
While Unicorns of Love has represented the League of Legends Continental League internationally for the past few seasons, this season's UOL has struggled to maintain the reputation of one of the stronger wildcard region teams in the world despite the organization retaining the majority of its roster's core. UOL went 2-6 at the 2021 Mid-Season Invitational, losing a tiebreaker to League of Legends Championship Oceania representative Pentanet.GG.
UOL has never reached the heights of Albus Nox Luna, who, at Worlds 2016, finished top 8 for the first and only time in the history of the LCL. However, at Worlds 2020, Unicorns of Love qualified for the group stage of the main event, and while the squad failed to win a match, qualifying for groups at Worlds for only the second time in LCL history was an accomplishment worth celebrating. In 2019, UOL faced off against Splyce in the Play-In, but failed to head to groups in a narrow 2-3 loss to SPY.
