Esports organization Evil Geniuses has reportedly acquired Dignitas Top Laner Heo "Huni" Seung-hoon ahead of the 2020 League of Legends Championship Series Summer Split. The alleged acquisition was reported by ESPN Esports' Jacob Wolf on the afternoon of Wednesday, May 27.
UPDATE 5/28: Evil Geniuses confirmed the signing of Huni in an announcement tweet Thursday afternoon. No other updates regarding the EG starting roster for the LCS have been given at this time.
Huni was instrumental in helping Clutch Gaming qualify for the 2019 World Championship, and re-signed with the organization after its Dignitas rebrand on a two-year, $2.3 million contract. On April 4, DIG granted Huni permission to look for other teams.
Dignitas assumedly is letting Huni look for other teams due to the organization's poor finish in the 2020 LCS Spring Split. DIG finished in 7th place with a record of 9-11, missing the 2020 LCS Spring Playoffs by a single loss after failing to defeat Golden Guardians in a tiebreaker match at the end of regular season play. If DIG was to allow Huni to go to another team, it would free up plenty of team payroll as Huni's contract allegedly takes about 1/3 of the team's total roster budget.
Evil Geniuses finished in 2nd place in the Spring Split, and followed up with a 3rd place finish in the Spring Playoffs. Huni would absolutely be an individual upgrade over Colin "Kumo" Zhao, but if he is to join the EG roster as Wolf's report implies, it would prompt a curious set of decision for the organization to make ahead of the Summer Split.
Evil Geniuses' LCS roster already possesses two imports in AD Carry Bae "Bang" Jun-sik and Mid Laner Daniele "Jiizuke" Di Mauro, both of whom were instrumental in the team's late spring surge. Because Evil Geniuses Academy Mid Laner Ahmad "Giyuu" Charif is also an import, for Huni to start in the LCS would mean the benching of Bang in favor of EG Academy AD Carry Matthew "Deftly" Chen. This alleged roster move could also imply that either Bang or Jiizuke is parting ways with EG.
EG's roster changes ahead of the 2020 LCS Summer Split have yet to be confirmed officially by any party, but the addition of Huni might be what the team needs to elevate itself above a top 3 finish in the LCS.
