Background
The Emerald Dream is one of the most mysterious realms in Warcraft lore. Apart from being created by the Titans, little is known about it. True to its name, it is more of an ethereal dimension rather than a tangible place, accessible only through special means.
As Azeroth's source of life, it was strictly safeguarded. Ysera, then the Dragon Aspect of the green dragonflight, watched over it, while druids could enter the Emerald Dream through the World Tree to maintain and protect it.

Of course, such an important place was also a prime target for invaders. Throughout Warcraft’s history, it has faced multiple threats—whether it was the World Tree burning or the Old Gods corrupting it, transforming parts of the realm into the dreaded Emerald Nightmare.
More recently, Fyrakk the Blazing, the Primal Incarnate leading the corrupted druids, launched a massive assault, attempting to burn the World Tree growing within the Emerald Dream. Players intervened to stop him.

And now, we meet Lord Xavius—a figure infamous for his attempts to turn the Emerald Dream into a nightmare. He has already appeared once in Hearthstone but didn’t make much of an impact after being replaced with the Demon Hunter class card following that class’s introduction.
Xavius was once a Night Elf who fell to corruption, serving Sargeras and aiding the Burning Legion’s invasion of Azeroth. However, Malfurion Stormrage defeated and killed him. Sargeras resurrected Xavius by transforming him into the first Satyr. Despite his newfound power, Xavius was defeated again by Malfurion and cast into the sea.
While submerged, he heard the whispers of the Old Gods, returning once more to expand the Emerald Nightmare, corrupting life forms and plotting to take over both the Emerald Dream and Azeroth. However, he was once again defeated and sealed away by Malfurion.

Of course, seals are made to be broken. Xavius returned once more, striking down Ysera, capturing Malfurion, and corrupting key druidic figures such as Cenarius, Ursoc, and Ursol. His efforts posed a grave threat to Azeroth.
He ultimately appeared as the final boss of the Emerald Nightmare raid in World of Warcraft, where players thoroughly defeated him. Though the nightmare he spread was mainly purified, some remnants lingered.
True to his nature, Xavius has now arrived at the Tavern, bringing "gifts" tainted by nightmare. Who could resist such sweet temptations?

Card Overview & Strengths/Weaknesses
[Nightmare Lord Xavius] is a 4‑Mana, 4/4 Legendary neutral minion (Demon). His Battlecry lets you Discover a minion from your deck and grant it a “Dark Gift.”
"Dark Gift" is a new mechanic tied to the Nightmare theme, affecting cards from Warlock, Death Knight, Demon Hunter, Rogue, and Warrior.
Cards with "Dark Gift" typically involve Discovering a minion and applying a buff. Except for Xavius, all other "Dark Gift" cards generate a new minion rather than selecting one from the deck.
There are ten possible Dark Gifts, each providing a unique bonus to the Discovered minion:
- [Waking Terror]: +3 Attack and Lifesteal
- [Well Rested]: +2/+2 and Elusive
- [Short Claws]: Costs (2) less, but has -2 Attack (only offered to minions that won’t drop below 1 Attack)
- [Sleepwalker]: Charge
- [Living Nightmare]: When you play this minion, summon a 2/2 copy of it
- [Rude Awakening]: This minion's Battlecries trigger twice (only offered to minions with a Battlecry effect)
- [Bundled Up]: +4 Health and Taunt
- [Persisting Horror]: Is Reborn with full Health and enchantments intact
- [Sweet Dreams]: +4/+5, placed on top of your deck
- [Harpy’s Talons]: Divine Shield, Windfury

Unlike other "Dark Gift" cards that generate minions, Xavius Discovers a minion from your deck and grants it a buff. Since "Dark Gift" effects are inherently valuable, being able to pick from your own strong minions makes this card particularly useful.
For example, if you can grant Rush to [The Ceaseless Expanse], trigger double Battlecry on [Colossus], or duplicate [Infestor], you could dramatically swing the game in your favor.
While "Dark Gift" is a Nightmare mechanic, Xavius is a neutral card, meaning he can be used without specific synergy—simply as a solid value generator.
However, the random nature of the buffs means the discovered minion might not always receive an ideal enhancement. This makes it challenging to pull off precise combo plays centered around a specific "Dark Gift."
Ultimately, Xavius will likely be used in minion-heavy decks aiming for value generation rather than strict synergy-based strategies. Even without an exact match, most "Dark Gift" buffs are still incredibly powerful.

Additional Cards Featuring "Dark Gift"
[Overgrown Horror] is a 5-Mana, 4/6 Warlock minion with Taunt. Its Battlecry reads: “Reduce the Cost of all minions in your hand with Dark Gifts by (2). Its strength will depend on how many "Dark Gift" minions you have in your deck. If many are low-cost, playing [Overgrown Horror] on Turn 5 could set up a powerful tempo swing by discounting multiple cards.

▲ Several solid 3-Mana minions to Discover with "Mad Entity."
[Grotesque Runeblade] is a 2-Mana 2/2 Death Knight Weapon that requires 1 Blood Rune and 1 Unholy Rune.
- If your last played card had an Unholy Rune, it gains +1 Attack.
- If your last played card had a Blood Rune, it gains +1 Durability.
If you played a 1-Blood, 1-Unholy card before it, this becomes a 2-Mana 3/3 Weapon. However, since there are currently no cheap 1-Blood, 1-Unholy cards, consistently playing this on Turn 2 at full value might be difficult. It seems that this expansion’s Death Knight will also support the Unholy/Blood rune synergy.

▲ There are still some well-performing cards with the same runes available in Standard.
Then there’s [Nightmare Dragonkin], a Demon Hunter card. This 3-mana, 4/2 minion (with the Beast type) comes with Deathrattle and reduces the cost of the rightmost card in your hand by 2. With its aggressive 4/2 stats and by supporting both banisher and Deathrattle mechanics, it’s an excellent early play that also helps trigger banisher effects.
Cards like [Tuskpiercer] (which draws Deathrattle minions) and [Zai, the Incredible] (which copies the left-most and right-most cards—returning as a core set card) indicate that Nightmare Dragonkin could serve as a strong enabler in your deck.

▲ Zhai returns to the core set now buffed to a 6/4.
Lastly, we have [Bloodthistle Illusionist], a neutral minion. This 3-mana, 2/4 Demon has a Battlecry that copies it and summons the copy. One of the copies comes with an effect that causes it to die if it takes damage—effectively making it function as if it had only 1 Health. Like most copied minions, it’s best to buff them in hand or in your deck before they’re played to maximize efficiency. This plays well with Dark Gift minions that are discovered and buffed in hand.
In particular, it seems to have strong synergy with gifts like [Sweet Dreams]—which provides a +4/+5 buff—or [Waking Terror]—which grants +3 Attack and Lifesteal. Alternatively, the fact that one of the copies dies upon taking damage might open up some Deathrattle synergies. However, aside from cards like [Threads of Despair] that can dish out area damage, there doesn’t appear to be a clear Deathrattle enabler available at the moment.

Conclusion
Since the Emerald Dream expansion has just begun its reveal cycle, it’s too early to predict exactly how Xavius and Nightmare minions will impact the meta.
Among the Nightmare classes:
- Control decks (Warlock, Warrior, Death Knight) could leverage "Dark Gifts" for late-game value.
- Tempo-oriented classes (Rogue, Demon Hunter) might use low-cost "Dark Gift" minions to pressure early.
With the Core Set rotation lowering overall card power and the addition of mana ramping Neutral cards like [Ysera, Aspect of the Emerald Dream], midrange tempo decks may find good use for Xavius.
As the Year of the Pegasus ends and the Year of the Raptor begins, the Emerald Dream awaits. But so does the Nightmare, offering its dark temptations. How sweet will these "Gifts" turn out to be? Find out on March 26, when Dream and Nightmare collide!
