Today marks a significant milestone in League of Legends esports with the launch of the Global Power Rankings, a data-driven tool powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS) technology. The rankings are designed to assess team strength across Tier 1 leagues, providing fans and analysts with a clearer view of the competitive landscape.

 

The Global Power Rankings evaluate Tier 1 League of Legends teams worldwide using an ELO-based system that factors in both individual team performance and the strength of their respective regions. Updated daily throughout the 2024 Worlds tournament, the rankings offer a comprehensive and transparent view of the global esports scene.

 

The system is designed to meet the unique challenges of League of Legends, where bi-weekly patch updates and varying league structures constantly shift the competitive meta. At the heart of the rankings is a blended ELO metric, which gives an 80% weight to a team's ELO and 20% to their league's ELO. This balance ensures the rankings reflect both team performance and the strength of competition.

 

Key features include game-based resolution, where rankings are updated after every match, and contextualized match weighting, where international events and knockout matches carry more weight than regional and group-stage games. The model uses a three-year window to assess league strength and a two-year window for team performance, allowing for roster changes while maintaining statistical rigor.

 

Looking ahead, potential enhancements to the system include incorporating in-game stats, introducing player-specific rankings, and refining the weight of certain matches to improve accuracy.

 

The Global Power Rankings will be featured throughout the 2024 World Championship on lolesports.com, with the final rankings released after the World Final on Nov. 2.
