Much hype was generated last March when Alibaba Group, the largest retailer in the world, announced plans to host its own eSports tounament. Yesterday, AliSports - a subsidiary of Alibaba Group - went above and beyond public expectations by revealing a $3.7M prize pool for said event. The tournament, dubbed the World Electronic Sports Games (WESG), plans to feature four of the most competitive titles in eSports: DotA 2, Counter Strike: Global Offensive, StarCraft 2, and Hearthstone.
To put the sheer size of WESG's prize pool into persepctive, a first place finish in WESG SC2 will net more than double of the Global Champion's cut from last year's BlizzCon. The bounties placed on the other three games' top finishes are also very impressive, only being bested by the absolute largest events of their respective titles.
The WESG Grand Finals will take place in China this December.
