2019 is soon coming to an end. Over the whole year, there have been many champions that appeared in the LoL esports scene, and there are those that haven’t. We weren't able to see champions like Pantheon throughout the World Championship except for 1 game during the Play-ins.
There were high draft rates for specific champions, but they varied by the league and season, obviously because of the patches and ‘meta’. For example, Karthus was quite a popular pick in the LEC, but he didn’t appear as much in other leagues. Let’s check out the most popular champions and trends in each major league throughout the year.
*Note: All stats are based on the regular season via LoL Gamepedia
The hottest champion in the 2019 LCK Spring Split was Lucian. He was picked or banned in 188 of the games (90.4%) and was played in 71 games by 16 different players. Compared to his insanely high draft rate, he won 35 of 71 games played, which was just around average.
Galio was played by 24 different players in 3 different positions. Alongside the usual mid and bottom appearances, kt Rolster Song “Smeb” Kyeong-ho played 1 game with Galio top and won that game. Lissandra and Ezreal followed Lucian and Galio.
Champions that had the highest win rate were Fiora, Shen, and Vladimir. Fiora only lost two games out of 10. Shen was 15-7, Vladimir was 28-15. Ashe, Tahm Kench, Draven, Rakan, and LeBlanc also had a 60+% win rate.
On the other hand, Karma only won 1 game out of 8 games picked. Irelia also had an underwhelming win rate of 21.1%, and Sejuani didn’t fare well with 27.8%. Xin Zhao, Viktor, Sivir, and Nocturne also had a win rate of under 40%.
Sejuani was completely different in the summer. She had the highest pick/ban percentage with 92.7%, appearing in 91 games. She even appeared as top and support in 4 games, winning all of them.
The new cat was a widely popular ban, as Yuumi was banned in 153 games, being the most banned champion this season. Son “Lehends” Si-woo was especially strong on Yuumi. He won all 6 games that he controlled the cat. Aatrox was also quite popular and was played in top, jungle, and mid. Karma was played in all positions except the jungle.
There was a unique champion during the summer. Veigar appeared in 4 games, piloted by only one person: Song “Fly” Yong-jun. He won all four games. Draven was also played by only one player, Jang “Ghost” Yong-jun, and had an 80% win rate in 5 games.
The winningest champion during the summer was Rakan. Among the champions that were picked 10 or more times, Rakan had a 63.3% win rate topping Yasuo and Alistar that followed with 62.5%. Camille, Jayce, and Sejuani also had a 60+% win rate.
Zoe and Olaf had the lowest win rate during the summer. Zoe only won 7 while dropping 19 and Olaf was 9-21. However, Lee “Tarzan” Seung-yong had a 5-1 record on Olaf. If it weren’t for Tarzan, Olaf would have been 4-20.
Lucian, Ezreal, Cassiopeia, Jayce, and Lissandra were the most picked or banned champions in 2019 LCS Spring. Cassiopeia was a widely popular ban this season, as she was viable in all three carry lanes. She had a 7-1 record in the 8 games she was played in.
Among the champions that appeared in 10 or more games, Jinx had the highest win rate of 80%. Sejuani was 69.6%. Multiple champions had a perfect record although they didn’t appear that much such as Kindred (5-0) and Leona (3-0). Irelia came close behind with a 77.8% win rate. Chae “Piglet” Kwang-jin was 3-0 on Irelia.
It was a disastrous season for Olaf, who didn’t win a single game out of the 9 games he was picked. Compared to its popularity, Lucian didn’t do well either; he won only 6 out of 19, having a 31.6% win rate.
Yuumi, Aatrox, and Sejuani were all picked or banned in more than 90% of the games. Aatrox and Sejuani appeared in about half of the games, but there was only one game that Yuumi didn’t appear in the draft. Yuumi won 13 out of the 18 games picked. The Sona-Taric or Sona-Tahm Kench comps were quite popular, so Sona saw a 72% pick/ban rate and a 61.5% win rate. Aatrox had 25 wins out of 42 games.
While Sona was cheesing the bot lane, Caitlyn performed well. She appeared in 12 games and won 10 of them. Trundle was also hot in the jungle with a 76.9% win rate. Besides that, Lux, Skarner, and Jayce also had quite a high win rate.
At the bottom of the list were Ryze, Tahm Kench, and Neeko. They all had a sub-par season ranging from a 30-33.3% win rate. Zed also made an appearance in 3 games but lost in all 3 including a bot lane appearance by Sun “Cody Sun” Li-yu.
LEC also featured Lucian during the draft in 89 of the 91 games played. He was picked more often than the LCS, though, and had an even 50% win rate. Jayce and Lissandra were popular as well but not as close as Lucian. The champions that made the most appearances on stage were Alistar and Braum. They each were picked 37 and 36 times, respectively. Alistar did alright, having a 48.6% win rate, but Braum only won 38.9%.
Karthus was a unique champion that didn’t appear as often in other regions. He was banned a lot more often than he was picked having 42 bans. In the 19 games, he had a decent 11-8 record. Although Karthus was most played in the jungle, he also made an appearance in mid lane by Daniele “Jiizuke” di Mauro.
Rek’Sai had an especially high win rate with 75%, Jonas “Kold” Andersen had a perfect 4-0 record. As one of the most picked or banned champions, Jayce won 10 out of 14 games that he was picked in. Other champions with high win rates were Draven, Olaf, Rakan, and LeBlanc.
Cassiopeia had quite a high pick/ban rate, but she only won 16.7% of the games. Alongside Cassiopeia, Xin Zhao only had 1 win, although he wasn’t drafted that often. Tahm Kench and Sion also lost more than they won.
Yuumi, Aatrox, Sylas, Sejuani, and Irelia appeared during the draft at least 70 times in the summer. Sylas was played the most, being played in 40 games by 22 players in top, jungle, and mid positions.
The champions that had a high win rate were Gnar and Qiyana. Qiyana started getting appearing as soon as she was available. She was picked or banned in nearly half of the games and had a high 68.8% win rate. Akali, Karma, Elise, and Gragas also had a 60+% win rate. Karma was picked into the bot lane 5 times by Martin “Rekkles” Larsson and had a decent 4-1 record.
Two champions had a win rate of under 30% which were Kennen and Olaf. Skarner, Mordekaiser, Renekton, and Ezreal followed. Irelia, who was one of the most appearing champions in the draft, also had a sub-par win rate of 38.5%.
Zoe was very unpopular in the EU. She was picked or banned only once. Although Zoe wasn’t a very popular pick in the meta, she appeared from time to time in other regions, but not in the LEC. There were a few unique picks that the LEC featured in the summer. Ivern, Janna, and Garen. Garen later became a meta cheese pick at Worlds. Soraka was also picked in top lane by Martin “Wunder” Nordahl Hansen.
Lissandra, Galio, and Zoe topped the list in the LPL Spring. Lissandra appeared in 88.3% of the drafts, being picked 123 times and banned 134 times. She was even played as a support for 3 games by Tian “Meiko” Ye and Zuo “LvMao” Ming-hao. Galio and Zoe followed with 75.3% and 72.5%.
Lucian was one of the most banned champions in all other regions, but in the LPL, he went through the draft phase quite often. He was still quite popular, as he was the 5th most picked or banned champion. However, his win rate was only at 36%.
The champions that had a high win rate were Poppy, Rakan, and Xayah. These champions had a win rate of around 70% while Ryze only won 31.7% of his games. Yu “JackeyLove” Wen-bo contributed to Xayah’s win rate by having a perfect 5-0 record. Ashe, Renekton, and Varus also had a high win rate.
Olaf and Sylas were the most popular picks in the summer for the LPL. They were picked or banned in 88.5% and 87.1% of the games, respectively. Sylas was controlled by the most players with 46. Among those 46 players, Kim “GimGoon” Han-saem was especially strong, winning 7 games out of 7. Irelia, Aatrox, and Yuumi followed in popularity.
Gangplank had the highest win rate with 66.7%. Varus came next, followed by Sion (63.2%), Alistar (62.2%), and Qiyana (62.1%). On the other end of the list, Taric and Volibear had low win rates of 27.3% and 28.6%.
Even with the trend of Sona bot, the LPL, which has been known to be the league of ADCs, did not follow much. Sona was only picked on 15 occasions. The LPL is also known to play Kai’Sa very often. Kai’Sa was picked in 109 games, just behind Sylas’ 130 games.
