The Worlds 2019 Group Stage has finally come to a close, and with it, NA's time at Worlds. Only three regions will be represented in the Knockout Stage - the LCK, LPL, and LEC. The bracket has been set, and the teams will go on to prepare for their respective Bo5s in hopes of claiming the title.
But back to Group D!
There is one final Group Stage MVP to be awarded, and today I feel has a pretty clear victor as well. First, it really has to go to a Damwon player. Yes, IG also qualified, but when you look at the game between the two, every player on IG fell flat in some way that contributed to their loss. So DWG will claim the MVP.
And while there is a huge case for Kim "Canyon" Geon-bu (who won it once before), Heo "ShowMaker" Su really deserves it, specifically for how he was able to turn the tides in that IG game I mentioned previously. After an incredibly difficult start, with Kang "TheShy" Seung-lok and Gao "Ning" Zhen-Ning repeatedly smashing down Jang "Nuguri" Ha-gwon, ShowMaker popped into the top lane and stole a clean triple kill and completely reset the game for DWG.
If he doesnt make that play, IG likely render Nuguri to moving-ward status and just out pressure the whole rest of the game away. But that hard clapback he gave them turned the game around enough that they managed to take the win.
Overall, ShowMaker never died on the day. He had a perfect 32 KDA. In his last game, he was somewhat of a nonfactor for an incredibly long period of time, but eventually when the comp all came together, he filled his role perfectly.
The rest of his team played well, for sure, so maybe it just makes it easy for him to shine, but that crucial roam top against IG netted them first place. TheShy earns an onorable mention/silver medal for his absolute lane kingdom throughout the day. He made Nuguri switch off Klepto and wholeheartedly obliterated Impact despite the counter pick.
These players from both advancing teams have incredible ceilings. DWG was a challenger team last year, scrimming the former Worlds participants because they were really that good. And of course, IG won Worlds!
Be sure to watch them in the Knockout Stage starting next weekend. And check back here for news and updates throughout the rest of Worlds 2019.
