Ahhh the beloved Group of Death. So much story in this group. The winningest Worlds team in history, the most storied LPL team, and the season one Worlds winners (this is a joke), and the LCS Cowboys all in one group.
In all seriousness, when the Group Draw happened a month ago, it was clear that this group held three of the top five or six teams at Worlds, none would be a surprise if they ended up in the Finals. But of course, they way the current system works only allows for two teams to advance, and at the end of the day, those two teams were SKT and FNC.
And while normally I complain that my job is too hard (I'm a millenial, okay) because how could I possibly pick one single MVP in the midst of so many good players, I think today it is rather simple.
Martin "Rekkles" Larsson easily wins MVP for the second Round Robin for Group C, hands down.
FNC had to pull off a miracle run to make it through today, they needed to beat both SKT and RNG if they wanted to qualify. And they did! (And they also beat Clutch, but we won't talk about that game, because they really probably shouldn't have and now my bias is showing and...)
After what was an incredibly poor showing from the LEC second seed in their first game against Clutch, FNC completely flipped the switch and gave SKT their only loss of the Group Stage. Rekkles went 3/0/11 in that game!
And as impressive as that is, giving SKT their only loss, the most impressive thing, for Rekkles at least, is their defeat of RNG. Going into the game, Jian "Uzi" Zi-Hao had a 9-1 record against Rekkles, and despite the pressure of Uzi, of failing to advance, of knowing they had just lost to them before, Rekkles had yet another incredible game.
He and Zdravets "Hylissang" Iliev Galabov completely shut down RNG's bot lane, who had been given all the resources and jungle attention as always. Rekkles went on to have another deathless game, going 5/0/4. Uzi was completely shut down, and with it, RNG's hopes for a Knockout Stage appearance.
Rekkles and the FNC boys will be drawn their Knockout Stage opponent after the games on Sunday, Oct. 20th. As the second seed, they'll be set to face a first seed from another group.
