Last week on the NBA 2K League’s live Twitch and YouTube broadcast, the league aired the first episode of a new content series entitled, “NBA 2K League Locked In powered by AT&T.” The series goes behind the scenes into the lives of NBA 2K League players off the virtual court, focusing on the personal stories of the league’s 126 players and 21 teams.
The first episode, which fans can view on the NBA 2K League YouTube Channel, is entitled “Building and Rebuilding” and focuses on two teams – NetsGC and Mavs Gaming – at different points in their development but facing the similar challenge of building new identities around a franchise player.
- NetsGC, one of four new teams to join the NBA 2K League for season two, selected 2018 NBA 2K League Finals MVP Nate “NateKahl” Kahl in the league’s first expansion draft and immediately made him the face of their franchise. NateKahl spent his first season with Knicks Gaming and has taken his championship experience across the river as he seeks to lead NetsGC in their first season in the league.
Mavs Gaming selected Artreyo “Dimez” Boyd with the first overall pick in the inaugural NBA 2K League Draft in April 2018. Following a disappointing season that saw Mavs Gaming finish 6-8 and miss the playoffs, the team drafted five new players to better build around Dimez and his world-class skillset in the hopes of more success in season two.
Upcoming episodes of NBA 2K League Locked In powered by AT&T will focus on:
- Two rookies, Spencer “Ria” Wyman (Jazz Gaming) and Jack “Jaacko” Stevenson (Pistons GT), who have made an immediate impact in their young NBA 2K League careers. Ria was selected first overall in the 2019 NBA 2K League Draft and averaged an impressive 17.5 ppg and 11 rpg in THE TIPOFF powered by AT&T, the league’s first tournament of the season. Jaacko, a New Zealand-native, qualified for the NBA 2K League Draft following his standout performance at the NBA 2K League APAC Invitational in Hong Kong in February and made his NBA 2K League debut on April 17 in impressive fashion, leading Pistons GT to a 76-68 victory over Bucks Gaming.
- The aspiring artists of the NBA 2K League, including T-Wolves Gaming’s Brian “NachoTraynor” Traynor and Magic Gaming’s Cameron “KingCamRoyalty” Ford.
- The NBA 2K League going to Las Vegas for the league’s second tournament of the season – THE TURN powered by AT&T, which will take place Thursday, May 9 through Saturday, May 11 at HyperX Esports Arena Las Vegas at Luxor Hotel and Casino, marking the first time NBA 2K League games will be held outside of the NBA 2K League Studio Powered by Intel in New York City.
“Anything we can do to help bring fans closer to the sport they love is what our NBA partnership is all about, and why we’re thrilled to help the NBA 2K League make these stories and this original content series happen,” said Shiz Suzuki, assistant vice president of Sponsorships & Experiential Marketing for AT&T Communications. “Those who follow the action know how multifaceted these players are, and this series brings that to life with a riveting approach to storytelling that even those unfamiliar with the League can look forward to watching.”
NBA 2K League Locked In powered by AT&T builds on a content series the league debuted in the lead-up to the 2019 NBA 2K League Draft entitled, “Draft Hopefuls,” which chronicled four aspiring NBA 2K League players as they tried out for the league in the hopes of being drafted.
Draft Hopefuls included features on Chiquita “Chiquita” Evans, who made history when she was selected 56th overall by Warriors Gaming Squad and became the first woman drafted into the NBA 2K League, as well as a feature on Lytel “Lotty” Martin, a former Mt. Vernon, NY police officer who was selected 20th overall by 2018 runner-up Heat Check Gaming.
On February 5, AT&T and the NBA announced a multiyear marketing partnership to create enhanced experiences for basketball fans across the NBA, WNBA, NBA G League, NBA 2K League and USA Basketball. In addition to NBA 2K League Locked In powered by AT&T, THE TIPOFF, THE TURN, and THE TICKET are the NBA 2K League’s three tournaments that feature all 21 teams competing for banners that link together to form THE BANNER CHAIN powered by AT&T.
