On Apr. 25, Blizzard Entertainment announced on its website that "BlizzCon 2024" will not be held. After careful consideration over the past year, Blizzard made this decision and emphasized that it was not taken lightly, considering the high expectations from many fans. Additionally, the cancellation of BlizzCon is only temporary for this year, and it was clearly stated that BlizzCon itself is not being discontinued.
As a result, news related to several upcoming expansion packs will be introduced through alternative channels. Details about the new expansion pack for World of Warcraft, The War Within, and the expansion pack for Diablo 4, Vessel of Hatred, will be gradually revealed over the next few months. Blizzard also mentioned that they will participate in various gaming shows, including Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, to share updates.
Furthermore, Blizzard is preparing for a global offline event to commemorate Warcraft's 30th anniversary in 2024, and they announced plans to host events within Warcraft IP games throughout the year 2024.
BlizzCon, Blizzard's own game show, has been held every year since its inaugural event in 2005, but cancellations have occurred from time to time. The event was not held in 2006, the year after its first occurrence, but it passed without significant issues due to being in the early stages of development. In 2012, it was canceled due to urgent scheduling conflicts caused by the release of Diablo 3 and Mists of Pandaria.
Moreover, due to various issues including the aftermath of COVID-19, BlizzCon did not take place in 2020 and 2022. However, it received praise for its revival last year with the announcement of the three-part expansion pack for World of Warcraft and the expansion pack for Diablo 4.
