In a candid chat with Inven Global, G2 Esports' support star Mihael "Mikyx" Mehle delved deep into his views on the current scope of Worlds 2023, G2's unique approach to mastering the meta, and the intricacies of their recent bootcamp, including his evolving synergy with AD carry Steven "Hans Sama" Liv. Mikyx's observations particularly highlighted a skepticism about the capabilities of their LCS and LEC counterparts, barring his own squad.

Reflecting on the prospects of Western teams on the international stage, Mikyx didn't mince words. "The West is doomed. I have to admit everyone else in the West is really bronze, so I don't have any hope. I think we're actually good. So I think we can win. I think for the rest...actually Team Liquid could be decent." While some confidence in the talent and experience of TL is nice, it's clear he hasn't been impressed in the understanding of most teams. 

Much of his confidence clearly comes from G2 Esports' read on drafting. When asked about their bootcamp practice, and whether they stayed true to their own style or borrowed from the LCK and LPL, he stated, "We've been doing what we've been doing for the whole year. Whatever we think is good, we tried it and it worked. Maybe we learned some stuff from the top teams, but I think most teams are not very good at drafting for the meta. I don't think they have the best read. We have a pretty decent one. I wouldn't really say that we learned much from the Asian teams in terms of meta, I think more likely they learned from us. We had a pretty good read. Maybe not the top-top teams — I think they have their own thing that works for them."

His confidence is palpable, suggesting G2's proactive and innovative approach to the game gives them an edge, often setting trends rather than following them. Expanding on the overall competence across the board, he added, "I think there are very few teams that actually know what they're doing." 

The conversation then pivoted to the grind and nature of practice, where Mikyx advocated a more thoughtful approach over relentless gaming. "Yeah, I think spamming games way too much without thought is only going to get you so far. Even if you play five games in a row, it doesn't mean they're actually going to benefit you if you're just playing mindlessly. It's better to do VOD reviews, or engage in some kind of one-on-one practice, or practice with other teams. Talking to your teammates, as well." 

Regarding their recent bootcamp, Mikyx's satisfaction was evident. "Bootcamp so far has been pretty good. We spent our one month in the T1 facilities, and it's probably the nicest boot camp that I've had so far. They just had everything we needed. Solo queue and scrims have gone well. So yeah, overall, we've been doing pretty good. And I think we've improved a lot since the start of the bootcamp. And I think we're gonna go far." The superior resources provided by T1 significantly contributed to their positive experience, allowing them an environment where they could wholly concentrate on honing their skills and strategies.

Despite the intensive regimen, G2 didn't forgo relaxation and team-building activities. Balancing grueling practice sessions with leisure time was a conscious choice, informed by past experiences of burnout. "I think as long as we do some stuff outside of just perma playing, I think should be fine. I think that was probably the biggest thing from 2019, where we went to the finals, where I felt like completely burnt out. By the end, I think most of my teammates felt the same. So I think at this time, we just take a bit more of a chill approach," Mikyx shared, highlighting the team's commitment to preserving morale and team dynamics.

Speaking on his partnership with Hans Sama, Mikyx pointed out their enhanced communication and shared effort in practice. "We put a lot more effort into practice. We do a lot more activities, a lot more reviews than the other indicators are paid with. So we're more often on the same page, I guess. And we just talk more often outside of game about like, even outside the game stuff."

Mikyx's insights not only shed light on G2 Esports'  strong understanding of the current meta but also highlight the importance of a balanced approach to training, team synergy, and mental well-being. With all eyes focused on whether or not they can once again bring glory to the West, Mikyx seems fully confident in his team's aspirations.
