On Aug. 20, in the grand finals of the 2023 LCK Summer Split, Gen.G swept T1 and claimed their third straight championship. Although T1 had a great run from the fifth seed in the playoffs, they weren’t able to overcome the defending champions. After the match, interim head coach Lim “Tom” Jae-hyeon and jungler Moon “Oner” Hyeon-joon joined the media for a press conference.
You finished this season as the runner-up again. How was today’s match?
Tom: It’s regretful that the games didn’t go as we planned. We lost because they were the better team.
Oner: Gen.G was stronger than we thought. We were behind in all areas, so we lost 0-3. But Worlds is coming up, so we’ll get our revenge on a bigger stage.
Gen.G completed a three-peat now. Do you accept that they’re stronger?
Tom: We played a lot of best-of series, so we used up a lot of our cards. And it’s true that Gen.G was stronger than we thought. It may have been different if we had a bit more time to experiment with the picks that go well in the patch.
There are issues coming up with T1’s drafts. There are weaknesses in each meta.
Tom: The compositions and champions are different in each meta. We didn’t have enough compositions prepared, so we lost today.
Any last comments?
Tom: Although we lost today, Worlds is coming soon. I’ll make sure that we get good results at Worlds.
Oner: We lost to Gen.G three straight times in the finals, but I learned a lot, and Worlds is right around the corner. If I fall because of today, the fans would be disappointed, so I’ll recover and gain more momentum again. I’d like to thank my teammates, coaches, and staff members for working so hard up to now. I’ll make sure that today’s loss becomes a valuable lesson to imporve more.
