In a close 3-2 series, DRX defeated T1 to win the 2022 League of Legends World Championship. While it was not the first Worlds win for Support player Cho "BeryL" Geon-hee, it was the first win for the rest of the team's players, including legendary AD carry Kim "Deft" Hyuk-kyu. The victory marks the first time a Play-In team has won the tournament.
The first game was all about T1. After quickly cementing an early lead, T1 continued to snowball the lead and won several key plays throughout the first fifteen minutes of the game. T1's lead proved insurmountable, with them quickly winning the first game. DRX maintained their composure for Game 2 and stayed even with T1 throughout the early game. The two LCK teams swapped victories in fights, but DRX managed to do better overall to win the second game.
Although DRX had chances to win the series' third game, some risky Baron Nashor calls from DRX (as well as some clutch steals from Mun "Oner" Hyeon-jun) swung the game in T1's favor — taking the lead 2-1. DRX, however, evened the series once again with a very clean victory in Game 4. Although T1 managed to win several fights in the final game, the superior team fighting and decision-making of DRX allowed them to defeat T1 for the night's third and final time.
DRX came into Worlds 2022 as a Play-In team — unexpected by most fans and analysts to be a contender for the title. Their knockout stage matchups were considered some of the best tournaments of the series — with their games against EDward Gaming and Gen.G considered some of the highlights of the tournament. Deft has been a longtime staple in elite League of Legends, and has finally won a Worlds title after a decade of play.
