On Oct. 22, Gen.G defeated DWG KIA 3-2 in the quarterfinals of the 2022 LoL World Championship. It was an extremely close match for the two teams, but it was Gen.G who was standing in the end. After their amazing win, Gen.G mid laner Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon joined Sjokz and Jeesun Park on the stage for an interview.
The first thing I have to ask you is about the final fight that decided it all in the top lane. Talk me through it from your perspective and the elation you must have felt when you succeeded.
In that last fight, I thought if Viktor could just shoot the lasers and ult well, it’s alright to get focused and die, so I just did that.
And perfectly in that regard. When it comes to playing DWG KIA this year, it has always come to that decider game, but you always had the one up over them. Why do you think in this Bo5 specifically, when you look across the whole series, you were able to beat them?
All five games in this match were really important, so I really did my best. We were able to concentrate well, especially in game 5 — although we slightly tripped, we were able to close the game well.
The reverse sweep was looming. From a mental perspective, who stepped up in the team before that game 5, and what was the approach to make sure that you could bring it home and not have the reverse sweep completed?
Personally, I made many mistakes today, so I focused on reducing mistakes. That way, I think there weren’t any issues with my performance in game 5.
Overcoming that and in order to make it to your first semifinal at Worlds, it has been a year of milestones for you, Chovy. When it comes to this particular one, and making it to the semifinal, what is the importance to you when you look at the story of your career so far?
I think how I play is more important than what records I reach in my career, but I’m happy that I’ve reached the Worlds semifinals for the first time, and I’ll do my best to clasp on to my first opportunity.
When it comes to the semifinals, you could be up against DRX or EDG. I'd love to know who you think you will be playing and what your preference would be.
I think DRX will make it. [Laughs] Whichever team makes it through, it’ll be important for us to work hard to prepare for them.
