Day 5 of the 2022 LoL World Championship group stages saw four teams from group A fighting for two tickets into the quarterfinals of the tournament. Cloud9 was coming into day 5 with a 0-3 record, which meant a do or die situation for LCS’ first seed. T1, EDG, and Fnatic were all coming into the second round robin with a 2-1 record; with the way Fnatic was playing in the first round robin, it was hard to predict which team was moving on.

Despite their backs against the wall, Cloud9 managed to secure a victory over Fnatic on the first match of the day. With their top laner, Fudge, finally on a tank champion, Ornn, this team looked very different from when he was on aggressive bruisers like Fiora and Jax. C9 managed to secure a 3K gold lead by 12 minutes, which snowballed to them taking Fnatic’s bot inhibitor by the 22 minute mark. Despite Fnatic’s attempts at trying to turn things around straight after, C9 managed to shut them down and eventually win the game.

However, the gap between the West and the East was too wide, as both T1 and EDG managed to shut down C9 and Fnatic in their following respective matches. EDG’s victories over C9 and Fnatic sent the two Western teams home, which also meant that T1 and EDG secured their spots in the quarterfinals. It all came down to the final match between T1 and EDG for the quarterfinals seeding.

Undoubtedly, the MVP of this match was T1’s top laner, Choi “Zeus” Woo-je. Not only did he manage to avoid two ganks from EDG, the momentum of the match changed when he got a solo kill on his lane opponent, Flandre. From that point on, EDG looked very hasty, as Lee “Scout” Ye-chan looked for a flank after T1 secured the second drake. However, with Ryu “Keria” Min-seok’s silence and the CC chain from the rest of the team, Scout was 100-0’d by T1. Shortly after, Park “Viper” Do-hyeon’s Aphelios also got caught out in the mid lane, and from that point on, the match heavily swung in T1’s favor. Zeus was 8/1/2 on Gangplank after multiple teamfight victories, thus carrying his team to victory and the 1st seed for the quarterfinals.

Day 5 of the tournament also marked a huge milestone for the legendary Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok, as he managed to set a record for the most number of kills on the Worlds stage. Earlier in the group stages, he also set a milestone for playing in his 100th Worlds match. He looks to continue on setting new records, as he moves onto the quarterfinals of the tournament.
