The group stage for the 2022 LoL World Championship starts in just a few hours. Before these teams flew out to the United States [Mexico City for DRX], Inven Global had a chance to briefly ask each of the head coach’s thoughts on their group, on LCK’s chances of winning Worlds this year, and who they personally thought was going to outperform the rest of their competition.
Here’s what DWG KIA and Gen.G had to say.
DK Daeny [#3 seed]
DWG KIA is in group B, the group that many consider to be the ‘Group of Death’, alongside Evil Geniuses, G2 Esports, and JD Gaming. Is there a team that you hope to face outside your group?
I hope to face Rogue. The level of gameplay they’ve showcased this year has been impressive, so I think it’ll be a good match. Additionally, ‘Malrang’, a player who’s been with us previously is also on Rogue, so it’s a very welcoming feeling to potentially face him on the greatest stage of them all.
In the last two years, the LPL and the LCK have each won a Worlds title. What’s your take on the LCK’s chances this year?
I believe that the LCK has a much higher chance of winning Worlds this year. My reasons also align alongside my hopes that the LCK takes back the Summoner’s Cup back home.
Is there a particular player who you think will outperform the rest of his competition this year?
It’s hard to choose a single player. All six of our players are fulfilling their role to their fullest, and everybody’s giving it their 200% during practice. I hope that all their efforts will lead to great results.
GEN Score [#1 seed]
Gen.G’s in group D, alongside 100 Thieves, RNG, and CTBC Flying Oyster. Is there a team that you hope to face outside of your group?
Apart from the teams we’re facing in our group, we’d like to face last year’s world champions, EDward Gaming. I believe that our chances of winning Worlds will go up if we beat last year’s champions.
In the last two years, the LPL and the LCK have each won a Worlds title. What’s your take on the LCK’s chances this year?
While the LPL did take home the Summoner’s Cup more in recent years, I believe the LCK is still performing quite well. I’d say there’s about a 50% chance for the LCK to take the trophy back to our region.
Is there a particular player who you think will outperform the rest of his competition this year?
I’m hoping that a player who’s been with his team for a long time will perform well this year, so I’m anticipating Ruler to do well this year.
