Jaemin ‘KNEE’ Bae from global esports corporation, DRX, won EVO 2022, a fighting game tournament with the highest authority.
It is the first time in four years since 2018 that a South Korean player has won EVO. The tournament was held in Las Vegas, U.S., from August 5 to August 7, with 1,218 Tekken 7 users participating from around the world.
A large number of global Tekken 7 players participated in EVO 2022 including South Korea, Japan, the U.S., Europe, and Pakistan. After merged by Sony and venture company, RTS, EVO 2022 is the world’s first and the largest offline tournament and being held online during COVID-19 pandemic last year.
A total of 5,045 participants registered for nine fighting game championship, which shows the high popularity of the competition. In particular, it was a tournament that revealed massive interest in fighting game esports, as more than 150,000 simultaneous viewers of EVO 2022 were recorded through online streaming platforms such as AfreecaTV and Twitch.
Jaemin ‘KNEE’ Bae, who advanced to the quarterfinals without defeats, went straight to the Grand Final by defeating Dae-Il ‘Meo-IL’ Oh from KDF and Imran ‘KHAN’ Kahn from Pakistan. He used Feng Wei as his main character in this tournament, winning against ‘KHAN’ 3:1 with a perfect strategic game to become the owner of EVO 2022 championship trophy.
Jaemin ‘KNEE’ Bae, who boasted his skills by winning all 11 games from the preliminary to the final, won 550 points of the Tekken World Tour (TWT) and a prize of $7,215. In addition, Sungho ‘CHANEL’ Kang tied for 13th, and Byungho ‘Infested’ Park tied for 9th, finishing the tournament with overall good performance.
Jaemin ‘KNEE’ Bae proved to be Korea’s best player by showing outstanding performance in the ATL (AfreecaTV Tekken 7 League) since the offline world championships disappeared. Since June, when the TWT (Tekken World Tour) was announced, he reached the apex in the TWT points ranking, accomplishing five consecutive tournament wins. Moreover, by grasping the title of the best Tekken 7 player in the world through EVO 2022, he has written an unprecedented record of winning six consecutive tournaments, along with being close to winning 100 championships including 96 unofficial championships.
