According to Riot Games' YouTube channel and website, the developers of Project L have made significant progress with the game — including adding the longtime champion Illaoi, the Kraken Priestess, to the upcoming 2D fighter. In the video update,  Senior Director and Executive Producer for Riot Games Tom Cannon stated that the developers is concluding work on core mechanics, with a lot of the team moving on to creating in-game features and building champions. He went on to  discuss the game's payment model.

"One of our goals is to remove as many barriers as possible from you enjoying Project L, " Cannon stated. "We want you to be able to play no matter where you live, what your skill level is, or how much many you have to spend on a game. To that, I'm happy to confirm that Project L will be free-to-play."

In a blog post by associate game director and Project L gameplay design lead Shaun “UNCONKABLE!!!!” Rivera, the developer gave more details about how Illaoi will be designed in Project L — explaining the team's goals regarding the champion's design, movement, and gameplay. Rivera went into the process of studying movement, stating, "Illaoi has an extremely unique fighting style (a heavy golden idol and spirit tentacles combined), so these motion studies helped sort out some unknowns even more than if she were to use a sword or axe. We want to nail how her tentacles work and move, how her power is felt by her player, and how absolutely devastating it is to be hit by her."

Project L is Riot Games' take on traditional 2D fighting games. Following their expansion into other popular game markets like VALORANT,  Project L takes place in the League of Legends universe and will use champions from that game. There is no official word on when the game will be released.
