After their first two matches of the 2022 LPL Summer Split, Bilibili Gaming has signed mid laner Xie "icon" Tian-Yu to their roster.

The last time icon was active as a professional player was during the 2021 World Championship as the starting mid laner for LNG Esports, the number four seed from the LPL at the event. Global criticism was sent towards icon for his lackluster performance at the tournament, particularly in the case of being solo killed twice by Gwak "Bdd" Bo-seong — the starting mid laner for Gen.G at Worlds 2021 — in the span of a minute.

After LNG's elimination from the 2021 World Championship, icon addressed the criticism that came his way during the tournament, and one month later, parted ways with the organization.

LNG acquired FunPlus Phoenix mid laner Kim "Doinb" Tae-sang ahead of the 2022 LPL season, while icon found himself teamless to start the year.

Little is known as to what icon's specific role on Bilibil Gaming will be as the team already has a starting mid laner in Chu "FoFo" Chun-Lan. It's entirely possible that icon is merely there as a substitute or roster depth for BLG. But with the 2022 LPL Summer Split's best-of-three format, the team may try both mid laners to see what fits best or even platoon the pair going forward.

Bilibili Gaming finished outside of the top six of the 2022 LPL Summer Playoffs after being eliminated by eventual finalist Top Esports 3-1 and have since made changes to their roster. Legendary AD carry Jian "Uzi" Zi-Hao parted ways with the organization after a brief tenure due to stylistic differences, and after winning the 2022 Mid-Season Invitational, Royal Never Give Up traded top laner Chen "Bin" Ze-Bin to Bilibili Gaming straight across for top laner Chen "Breathe" Chen.
