The curse has been lifted: After their victory against SK Gaming during Super Week of the 2022 LEC Spring Split, United Kingdom-based esports organization Excel Esports qualified for playoffs. Their qualifying marks the first time the team has progressed to this stage of the LEC. With their qualification, every team currently in the LEC has made it to the playoffs at least once.
They will join teams such as Misfits, Fnatic, Rogue and G2 Esports in the playoffs. The final sixth team has yet to be decided — with Team Vitality's record currently keeping them as the front-runner. Excel fans and players we relieved at the result.
Bot laner Patrik "Patrik" Jírů expressed his excitement in a post-game interview with the LEC broadcast, stating "It means a lot because I’ve always been with Excel and they didn’t make it before…I’m just really happy I can give back to the fans a little bit, after all the support they’ve given me through the years."
The news comes after several major signings. Though the team held onto most of their players from last year, they signed former-Counter Logic Gaming top laner Finn "Finn" Wiestål. After playing with this lineup for a few games, they took advantage of the opportunity to sign star Support player Mihael "Mikyx" Mehle following his breakup with G2. Although some fans and industry figures saw this as unfair to Henk "Advienne" Reijenga — a player believed by most to be strong in their own right — the signing proved to be what the team needed, as Excel experienced better results afterward.
Excel Esports is a British esports organization beginning in late-2014. They joined the LEC as one of the ten starting franchise partners. Although they were very close to qualifying for the LEC playoffs several times, they barely missed out in previous Splits, often finishing in seventh place.
