According to a report by Dot Esports, the 2022 Mid-Season Invitational will be held in South Korea — the country's first major international League event since 2018, and the first time Korea has hosted MSI. If MSI indeed is held there, it will be the last of the major regions to host the tournament. No information has been released on what specific cities will be hosting the event, or what venues will be used.

The news comes after South Korea experienced some of the most restrictive COVID-19 standards in the world, making organizing such an event to have many challenges. Last month in January, Korea brought back live audiences to its domestic competition, with LoL Park allowing fans to be present for the first time in two years.

Riot has faced multiple challenges over the past two years because of the pandemic. In 2020, they canceled MSI and opted for a closed bubble system for Worlds hosted in China.  In 2021, Riot used a similar system, hosting the event in Iceland for MSI and Worlds. 2022 Worlds is set to be held across North America — with sections of the tournament being held in Mexico, Canada, and the United States.

South Korea has long been the most successful region in League's history — with teams from their major league winning Worlds six times. In the past, they have hosted international competitions such as Worlds in 2014 and 2018, as well as invited international teams to domestic tournaments like OGN The Champions Spring 2012. In the past, Worlds' finals in South Korea have been hosted at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, as well as the Incheon Munhak Stadium.
