T1 VALORANT coach David Denis was suspended for the upcoming Open Qualifier, after he cost his team their place in last weekend's qualifier for engaging in unauthorized communication with his players during a match. Denis issues a formal statement and apology on Twitter on Tuesday, explaining his actions and taking responsibility for his mistake.
"T1 Has completed a thorough review of the actions that took place this weekend during the VALORANT Champions Tour Open Qualifier competition and would like to express our regret for violating the rules and communicating outsides of pauses," T1 said in their official statement. "T1 has proactively suspended head coach, David Denis for this weekend's open qualifier. As a company T1 takes pride in fostering a culture of integrity in both our players and coaches."
"First and foremost I want to make it clear that I regret my actions," Denis said in his apology, issued following his suspension. "I did not represent our players, T1, or our fans well, and I’m truly sorry. I will continue to reflect on my actions and ensure that this never happens again. I also want to describe some context, not to justify my actions, but rather to provide some clarity to the community."
He went on to clarify that: "The communication logs show that all communication I had with players happened in between rounds or to a player who was already eliminated. This communication consisted of encouraging/supportive statements and general reminders. One exception to this was “help sewers”."
He continued: "There are no excuses for this - I can only say that I got caught up in the heat of the moment and did not think before I acted. I did not participate in the practice of watching the livestream during a match, or relaying any information to the players that they did not already have."
Riot issued a competitive ruling over the weekend, disqualifying T1's win over TSM after it was revealed that Denis had violated the rules, however, they are allowing T1 to return to competition for the Open Qualifiers 2 this weekend.
