Gen.G Peanut: "As long as we win the game, it’s okay for my laners to be pushed back in lane."

In the 2022 LCK Spring split, Gen.G continues to remain undefeated and stands at the top of the standings. Considered to be one of the favorites to win the LCK this split, the 2022 Gen.G roster continues to show unmatched dominance in the league.

One of the key differences within the Gen.G roster, is that players like Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon and Han “Peanut” Wang-ho, who were the main carries of their previous teams, have been relieved of that pressure to carry their games. The team’s primary goal seems to focus around adapting to various playstyles that optimized them for victory because as long as everyone played their part, they’d be able to dominate any opponent that stood in their way.

After their hard-earned 2-0 victory against Fredit BRION on Jan 20, Peanut joined Inven for a 1 on 1 interview.

Although it was a 2-0 victory, Fredit BRION put up a really good fight. How do you feel about your performance tonight?

We didn’t have much lane priority around the map in game 1, so it was quite tough. As for game 2, I’m personally disappointed with my personal performance.

Did you feel that the power of the ‘Camille-Galio-Jarvan IV’ combo was able to overcome the weak early game from Gen.G?

I felt that the composition power was enough to overcome the early game deficit. My teammates were very good at initiating the fights. We also had Jinx, so we had really strong teamfighting. However, even the slightest mistake could’ve led to our defeat, so we had to be careful.

Despite being pressured in the laning phase, you kept sneaking the Rift Herald and the dragon under your enemy’s noses.

Even when we’re not 100% sure that we can safely take objectives, there are windows of opportunities to take them when the enemy does something else for a little bit. If the enemy found us, I would’ve ran. After I returned from the LPL, I now try to gamble like this once or twice.

In a previous interview, you stated that even if your laners fall behind in lane, it’s up to you to help them overcome the disadvatageous states. How well do you think you’ve done that?

I think I did okay. I feel that even if they don’t win lane,  they don’t need to feel pressured. As long as we win the game, it’s okay for my laners to be pushed back in lane.

You managed to get a whopping 50 CS lead in game 2 over Um “UmTi” Sang-hyeon. What was the game plan behind such a lead?

When UmTi ganked mid as a level 3 Xin Zhao, ‘Chovy’ and I told each other that I was definitely going to have a CS lead the moment he showed mid. It was almost to the point where I said, “Jungle’s over”.

Fredit BRION managed to catch you out twice and closed the gap.

That was on me. While I don’t like to make excuses, there was construction going on at 2am for an hour and a half, so I was not in my best condition [laughter]. It’s healthier for me to just blame it on that. I believe that I’ve practiced enough to see kill angles on Talon properly.

In Gen.G’s last match against DWG KIA, the team was screaming at the end, while you were the only one that remained calm. Tell us what it was like at that moment.

I was ecstatic as well. Both DWG KIA and we made a lot of mistakes, and because it was a nail biter until the end, we were especially happy. It made us happier by the fact that our opponents were DWG KIA. Of course, their new squad still is working on their teamwork with their new members, so we were confident heading into that game. However, because Kim “Canyon” Geon-bu was still alive at the end, I felt that we couldn’t get complacent. That’s why I stayed calm and continued to make the calls until the end.

I remember during your days with the ROX Tigers, where you really got excited after a win. Has your mindset changed since then?

I mean, I still get very excited [laughter]. A single victory back in the day felt more electrifying than now. If you’re a pro for a long time, there will be times where you just get excited because you don’t want to lose. There was one time back in the day where we actually lost because we got too excited, so I wanted to celebrate after we took down the enemy Nexus.

Lastly, is there anything you’d like to say?

I’m glad that we’re on a three-match win streak. Our next match is against Hanwha Life Esports; we’ll make sure to prepare well for the match and close out week 2 undefeated.
