The 2021 League of Legends World Championship has concluded to a record-breaking viewership in the finals, with Chinese team EDward Gaming going through multiple long series to finally lift the Summoner’s Cup.
According to EsportsCharts, the finals reached 4M viewers (not including statistics from China) — a new viewership record for LoL esports. The previous record belonged to the Worlds 2019 semifinals match between G2 Esports and SK Telecom T1 with 3.9M.
The viewership record comes after a very successful year for LoL tournament. Just last week, the semifinal matchup between DWG KIA and T1 reached 3.5M viewers, while MSI finals between DWG KIA and Royal Never Give Up earlier this year also had record viewership for the event at 1.8M.
LoL esports not the only one breaking records
The news also follows a trend of ever-increasing viewing numbers for esports tournaments. The PGL Stockholm Major in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive has shown strong viewing numbers, as well — already breaking records for CSGO Majors, with the semifinal round yet to be played. Dota 2’s The International 10 — the premier event for the game — reached 2.7M viewers when it concluded last month, surpassing its previous 1.9M peak.
Despite Dota 2 boasting a record-breaking $40M prize pot for TI10, the event still lags in viewership to its League of Legends counterpart. With Worlds 2021 concluded, LoL has once again demonstrated its long-lasting appeal.
