Blizzard announced on Tuesday that they are pausing all plans to host BlizzConline early next year. The event was previously slated for February of 2022. According to the announcement post, they will be redirecting all the efforts going into the online replacement for BlizzCon into "supporting our teams and progressing developer of our games and experiences."
While BlizzConline is not happening, Blizzard made it clear that they will still be making announcements for their games, though they did not tell us when we can expect that or what the format of those announcements will be.
They also stated that they are working to reimagine what BlizzCon will look like going forward, though once again they provided very little detail into what they have planned.
"The first BlizzCon was held 16 years ago, and so much has changed in the time since—most notably, the multiple ways in which players and communities can come together and feel like they are a part of something bigger," the company explained. "Whatever the event looks like in the future, we also need to ensure that it feels as safe, welcoming, and inclusive as possible. We’re committed to continual communication with our players, and we see BlizzCon playing a big role in that going forward. We’re excited about what we’ll do with the event when we revisit it in the future."
BlizzCon was canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. Blizzard moved the event to BlizzConline in early 2021 as a replacement, but that event was criticized by many as inadequate, unfocused, and disappointing.
