Former League of Legends pro player and AD Carry legend Jian “Uzi” Zi-Hao announced this week that he's launching his own esports team called Ultra Fantastic Gaming (UFG). Co-founder of the team is singer Fan Chengcheng, of Nine Percent and NEX7 fame, and UFG's first order of business is to create a Wild Rift division.
Wild Rift is not yet officially released in China, but steps have already been taken in preparation. In February, the game was officially approved by China's National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA), and major esports organizations like Royal Never Give Up have already started recruiting for Wild Rift. The mobile version of League of Legends has already been in closed or open betas for most of the major regions since June last year, starting with Brazil and the Philippines and later releasing to the wider Southeast Asia region, Korea, and Japan (October 2020), Europe and CIS (December 2020), and the Americas (March 2021).
Uzi's re-entry into esports as a club owner and not a competitor is also logical. The player retired in June 2020 over health concerns, citing bad diet, stress, and type-2 diabetes. Uzi retired as one of the most accomplished players in League of Legends history, having won three LPL and one MSI titles, and two second-place Worlds finishes. While he never conquered the World Championship, Uzi was considered for the majority of his career to be the second-best player in the world behind Lee "Faker" Sang-hyeok.
