The Hearthstone development team has made thousands of cards over the years, drawing inspiration from pets, people, experiences, and...South Park?

As the United in Stormwind expansion is set to go live in August, the team has been slowly revealing cards that players can expect to get their hands on shortly after. Typically thematic to the World of Warcraft universe, a card was shown on Wednesday afternoon that took players by surprise.

Back in 2006, pop culture became swallowed up in the popularity of Blizzard's iconic MMORPG, World of Warcraft. While video games were not as socially acceptable as they are now, it was difficult to go anywhere without hearing about the title consuming children's and adults' minds.

South Park, the raunchy comedy television show on Comedy Central, opted to cash in on the moment in time. "Make Love, Not Warcraft" debuted on October 4 of that fall and was the eighth episode in the 10th season of the show. The synopsis was simple: the cast of deranged children became hooked on World of Warcraft, their lives became consumed by it overnight and hilarity ensued. Nerd culture was put at the forefront of one of the most popular television shows in the world and the episode won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program.

Fast forward 15 years, the Hearthstone team decided to pay homage to the parody with a card in its' honor. Titled Elwynn Boar, the lowly beast must be killed over and over (similar to how the episode portrayed the boys farming millions of boars to level up their characters) before an ultimate weapon is equipped. The Sword of a Thousand Truths, named after a God-like weapon sought after in the episode, aims to destroy the opponent's mana pool and health bar at the same time.

It didn't take long for players of the card game to catch on to the pop culture reference and praise the team's creativity. Considering the attention the show brought to the game (and visa versa), the development team put on their nostalgia caps and got to work.
