On June 11, in the 2021 League of Legends Champions Korea Summer Split, Gen.G squeezed past DRX in a close 2-1 match. Although Gen.G started off with a loss, they were able to take the next two games to win the match. After their win, top laner Kim “Rascal” Kwang-hee joined the press room to talk to the media.
How do you feel about today’s win?
I believe that the start is really important. We lost the first game and that gave me chills, but since we were able to turn it around, I feel good. I think we could keep this good vibe for a while.
What didn’t work out in the first game?
We were in too much of a hurry when we tried to fight at the dragon. After that, the sidelane priority went over completely to Akali. Also, DRX’s comp was good when they stuck together. It got really difficult after that dragon fight.
How was it playing at LoL Park? There were fans here as well.
When we were playing online matches, I really missed LoL Park. It was really great being able to see the fans. My parents came as well.
After losing game 1, you picked the red side. DRX also picked the red side in the third game. Several teams said that playing on the red side is difficult to draft, yet the two teams today played on red. What was the reason?
I also thought the draft was difficult for the red side. However, when we lost on blue side, we thought they would be comfortable playing on the side they won in the first game, so we picked red. I guess DRX picked the red side again since the red side won two straight games.
You struggled against the Xin Zhao, Lulu comp in the first game. How did you overcome it in the third game?
Rather than those two champions, the other champions were harder to face. So we tried to ban the champions or take them ourselves.
Your next match is against Hanwha Life Esports. Since they lost in their first game, they would be really determined to win. How do you think it’ll go?
I felt that Hanwha Life Esports’ drafts are rather unconventional. And since most of their players have very good macro, they play really well. Although they lost 0-2 to T1, they’re still a great team, so I think we should be preparing our game well.
Gen.G is one of the favorites again this season. Do you think it’s at last time to win the championship?
Frankly, I really don’t know how to answer this question. [Laughs] Starting from Spring 2020, we were considered the favorites season after season, but we were never able to win it. I really don’t know. But I do know that I really want to win this time. [Laughs]
Many different top champions are appearing. What do you think of this change?
So many things changed all at once. I’m usually pretty good at figuring out the tiers and counters, etc. but I don’t think I’ve figured it all out yet. All the top champions these days are very strong and have high potential. Any champion can appear depending on the team composition.
Right now, Gwen, Lee Sin, Nocturne, and Renekton are top-tier these days. They’re all good against tanks so the tank champion tiers fell.
How did you and the team try to improve the weaknesses in the spring?
I didn’t sleep well during the spring and I was in a bad condition, so this time, I exercised a lot during the offseason. As for the team, the coaching staff thought we rushed the macro too much, so they wanted us to be calmer.
Any last comments?
I’d like to thank all the fans who cheer for us. Especially, I’d like to thank Gompangdan for sending presents on my 4-year anniversary. I’ll try to work hard so that I could be more consistent and sold. Thank you.
