The Overwatch 2021 Anniversary event celebrating the game's fifth anniversary is live as of Tuesday. As usual, the new event brought a host of brand new skins for players to unlock, and this year the developers really hit the nail on the head in terms of event cosmetics. Most of the new skins are leaving a positive impression on Overwatch fans.
Here is are our rankings for the best skins released for this year's Overwatch Anniversary event.
#8 Junkfood Junkrat
The Junkfood Junkrat is a bright skin with a pink and baby blue color palette. The skin is themed around candy and royalty. It includes details like candy bombs, a sundae crown, cotton candy hair, and a candied peg leg. In addition, his tire is also made of candy, with the center being formed out of the top of a lollipop, while the spikes around the edge are made of candy corn.
If you like the bubblegum pop aesthetic, you are going to love the Junkfood Junkrat skin. I put this at the bottom of my list because the overall aesthetic is a bit too scattered and busy for me.
#7 8-Ball Hammond
Hammond's new 8-Ball skin turns Hammond into a giant 8-ball when he is in the ball form. When he is in his shooty-shooty form, the skin is basically a wooden mech design with some black and green accents and an 8 underneath his cockpit. This skin also gives Hammond himself a cute hamster vest and bow tie. The skin concept isn't bad, but it's a pretty basic design when compared to some of the more conceptually brilliant skins that are featured in this year's Anniversary event.
#6 Gladiator Doomfist
The new Gladiator Doomfist skin depicts Doomfist as an ancient Roman gladiator, but with a futuristic twist. This skin features the traditional bronze galeae helmet, but with an LED lit face mask. Similarly, he is also wearing traditional gauntlets but with some RGB chroma goodness to bring it into the future. Overwall, I really like the mix of futuristic and ancient elements on this skin. The fact that this is #6 tells you something about how great the rest of the skins on offer are.
#5 Moira Venus
Moira Venus is a highly imaginative skin, themed around Venus flytraps. The skin features a number of spiky plant-like elements around Moira's shoulders, feet, torso. On her back, there is a giant flower in place of her usual banshee backpack. Her healing hand has a bright yellow flower and her damage hand has an ominous red flower. Overall this skin has a very strong, well-executed concept, and I like it a lot.
#4 Ana Cybermedic
Ana's Cybermedic skin is incredible. It uses a dark grey and purple color scheme, which is contrasted against bright pink accents and an animated cybernetic cape design. Adding to the cyberpunk flavor of the skin is her futuristic-looking glasses and bright pink hair. WHile they could have really gone overboard with this design, the concept artists decided to stick with a more subdued aesthetic for Cybermedic and I think it paid off. This is definitely one of Ana's coolest skins.
#3 Echo Bird of Paradise
The Echo Bird in Paradise skin depicts Echo in a bright and colorful livery design inspired by a tropical bird's plumage. Her legs and wings are primarily a bright green, while her body and arms are made up of bright purple, pink, and yellow gradients. To literally top it all off, her head is donned with a yellow, red, and blue chrest of feathers over her bright pink face. When using this skin in-game, Echo really does look like a tropical bird while she is in the air. I think this may be my favorite Echo skin yet.
#2 Black Cat Sombra
Black Cat Sombra is an astoundingly cool skin that depicts Sombra in a cyber-hacker catsuit, complete with cat ears and a supervillain-style mask. Her suit features a purple and bright blue color scheme, contrasted with bright metal accents on her shoulders, knees, belt, and shoes. She also has a Long Top Punk Haircut that rounds out the cyberpunk aesthetic.
Some are already calling this the e-girl Sombra skin. Others have compared the Black Cat Sombra skin to DC Comic's Catwoman on account of the cat ears, catsuit, and whip on her hip. Regardless of what the skin reminds you of, there is no denying that this is in one of the coolest skin for Sombra in the whole game.
#1 Funky Baptiste
Funky Baptiste stands out as the most conceptually complete skin in this year's Anniversary event. Funky Baptiste, as the name suggests, is a 1970's style skin inspired by the funk music scene. This groovy skin features a 1970's style afro, platform shoes, flared pants, and a funky orange patterned shirt. His period-appropriate glasses and lava lamp backpack help round out this time capsule of a skin. I don't know if I will ever use another Baptiste skin ever again now that I have Funky Baptiste.
