Twitch is facing backlash, after using womxn in place of women in their Women's History Month blog on Monday. In the blog post they replace all instances of "woman" or "women" with "womxn", apparently because they thought it was the politically correct thing to do.
It was not.
"Why the X in Womxn?" asked Twitch in the blog. "All women are women, but we use Womxn to stand with intersectional feminism."
The problem is that "womxn" isn't actually a term used by intersectional feminists. Instead, it is a term used for non-cis women by trans-exclusionary radical feminists who want to make a distinction between "real women" and trans-women. As a result, the usage of womxn really missed the mark for many women, trans-women, and non-binary people.
A number of Twitter users expressed their discontentment at the term in the comments responding to the original tweet and independently after "#womxn" started trending due to Twitch's announcement.
The original Tweet has since been deleted, and Twitch released a statement apologizing for their blunder and promising to use the spelling "women" from now on.
"While we originally wanted to use a word that acknowledges the shortcoming of gender-binary language, after hearing directly from you, including members of the LGBTQIA+ community on Twitch, we will be using the spelling “women” moving forward," the company explained.
They said in a follow-up tweet: "We want to assure you that we have, and will continue to, work with the LGBTQIA+ community. We're still learning. Our good intentions don't always equate to positive impact, but we're committed to growing from these experiences, doing better, and ensuring we're inclusive to all."
