Variety streamer and competitive League of Legends player Andréas "Sardoche" Honnet has won online competitive chess championship PogChamps 3 against Rainn Wilson. Sardoche took home the gold when a blunder by Wilson handed Sardoche a checkmating pattern that allowed him to take the Wilson's king without any potential counter-play by the actor.

Chess master Daniel Rensch and TSM chess grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura were casting the PogChamps 3 finals, and their reactions say it all. Shortly after the reactions of Nakamura and Rensch, Wilson realized his mistake and Sardoche celebrated his victory with an emphatic pop-off.

Rainn Wilson, best known for his role as Dwight Schrute on popular North American sitcom 'The Office' met Sardoche in the finals after a narrow semifinals victory over Fortnite professional player and streamer Benjy "Benjyfishy" David Fish.

The entirety of the PogChamps 3 competition featured streamers, content creators, and chess players from all corners of the world, both material and virtual. In addition to many highly ranked chess masters participating, popular streamers like Félix "xQc" Lengyel and Imane "Pokimane" Anys also competed.

PogChamps 3 is just one example of the growing popularity of chess on Twitch. Between the global COVID-19 pandemic restricting in person events, as well as a renewed societal interest in chess due to hit Netflix original series 'Queen's Gambit' chess has seen more online viewership than ever before.

Other notable competitors included 100 Thieves streamer Nicole "Neekolul" Sanchez, who won the consolation bracket of PogChamps 3. MrBeast also competed and was eliminated in the consolation bracket.

For now, Sardoche can celebrate, but rest assured that online chess competition will only continue to get more fierce. Following popular YouTuber and philanthropist Jimmy "MrBeast" Donaldson's expressed interest in competing in PogChamps 4, Hikaru Nakamura offered to train him. As of now, the date for PogChamps 4 has not yet been announced, but according to Rensch on Friday's live stream, we can expect it to be sometime in the next 3-6 months.
