Early in the 2021 LPL Spring Split, it’s as if EDG has forgotten to lose. After the fifth week of the season, EDG is currently undefeated with a 7-0 (+12) record. There would be several reasons that EDG has been doing so great, but one of the biggest reasons is Park “Viper” Do-hyeon’s performance.
It’s the first season for Viper in the LPL, but he’s been carrying the team without any adapting period. He has earned 6 MVPs, 2nd most in the league. Viper was given the best rookie award for weeks 1~3 and was recognized as the best ADC in week 4.
Currently, the LPL is on a break before week 6 of the season starts. We were able to have a chat with Viper before the league continues.
How is it living in China?
I’m adapting very well. There are a lot of people that help me, so there’s not much trouble living here. The environment and food suit me well. I especially enjoy Hot Pot.
It’s the first time you’re playing in a different region from LCK. Why did you choose LPL?
I felt that I need improvement and I needed change for that. So I decided to take a challenge.
How is your synergy with Meiko?
It’s good. I’m already satisfied playing with him, but I think we can do better.
Many people say that your playstyle is much different from when you were in the LCK. You’ve become much more aggressive. Is it because of the league or the meta?
I think my plays last year were rather daunted, so I felt there was a problem. Now, I'm in the process of finding myself again, finding the feeling of what I had before.
In the LCK, Teddy had said that he changed his mindset as an ADC. Surviving was his no.1 priority, but he said that now he tries to deal as much damage as he can before he dies. What do you think about this?
I agree with him. I started to think like that from last year. The bot laner needs to deal as much damage as he can, even if it means risking death. I’ve been preparing and practicing in that direction so that I could deal as much damage as I can to help the team more.
It’s hard to believe that it’s your first season in the LPL since you’re performance is so amazing. You’ve been voted as the MVP several times and the team atmosphere seems great. How’s the synergy within the team?
First, everyone’s nice, so we get along very well. In the game, they all have great concentration so the synergy is great too.
Who was the most helpful in adapting to the team and China?
Scout was the most helpful. He teaches me everything — from what to eat to all the Chinese language that I don’t know.
How’s your Chinese?
I can take a hint. [Laughs]
You haven’t played that many matches yet, but to your experience, what’s the biggest difference between the LPL and LCK?
The first thing that comes to mind is that we play only once against one team, so we don’t have a chance for revenge. I think that makes me concentrate more on each match. The league consists of very competitive players and we all try to bring a fun match. Another thing is that the LCK still plays online matches. Here in China, we play in the arena, so it’s more tense and more fun.
Any last comments?
Thank you for always cheering for me and paying attention. I’ll try to keep this good flow up early in the season.
