Control: Ultimate Edition is, without doubt, the star in the trio of free games that come to PS Plus subscribers in February, together with Concrete Genie and Destruction AllStars. The critically-acclaimed action-adventure can be downloaded on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles starting Feb. 2, and with will come Control's next-gen update, fully equipped with ray tracing option and 60fps performance option. 

But here's the kicker. While developer Remedy has gotten praise — and more than several awards — for Control, publisher 505 Games has drawn mostly controversy when it has come to dealing with the game's distribution. When the next-gen upgrade was first announced in August last year, 505 Games confirmed that owners of Control's standard edition would not be able to upgrade to the next-gen version. The latter, instead, would only be available to the owners of the Control: Ultimate Edition. 

Not only that, but the transferring of save files is also clunky. PS4 Standard saves first have to be upgraded to PS4 Ultimate saves and from there, to PS5 saves. With all that in mind, many fans paid to get the PS4 Ultimate version, preparing for the next-gen upgrade. And now, every subscriber of PS Plus is getting it for free. 

For gamers who've been waiting to try Control, this is, of course, great news, as the game is among the highlights in the 2019 release cycle. For everyone else, though, there has to be a bitter-sweet feeling, especially if Sony isn't willing to help with refunds of unplayed or un-downloaded copies of these "prep for next-gen" PS4 Ultimate Editions purchases.
