DAMWON Gaming took down Suning 3-1 in the finals of the 2020 LoL World Championship. It was the first world championship taken by an LCK team in three years. After the match, Jang “Nuguri” Ha-gwon joined Park Jee-sun for an interview to talk about how he felt bringing the Summoner’s Cup back to Korea and which champion he would pick for the championship skin.
How do you feel lifting the Summoner’s Cup?
I’m honored that we’re the start of the LCK standing back up. I feel extremely good.
It was a new environment where it was Suning’s home and there were spectators. Weren’t you nervous?
Since there were a lot of people, I felt some nervousness. And most of the fans were cheering for Suning. Still, we had experienced the same last year, and we anticipated it, so we went over it naturally.
You farmed experience well last year. Although the score was 3-1, the game was a lot closer. Bin’s fighting was really scary. Nuguri played a very important role. How was it playing against him?
Suning’s snowballs mostly started from the top. In the first two games, we tried to step back and block them. But it was really stuffy, and especially after losing game 2, it started to get on my nerves. He’s really a strong player. It seemed that he liked playing sidelane champions, so I played champions that I wanted to play from game 3, so I feel good.
As you said, you changed styles from game 3. How was the feedback after game 2?
The opponent had a specific concept for today’s game in terms of picks and bans. We revised that a bit, and discussed how we would deal with them knowing their playstyles.
As much as you won the championship, which skin are you considering to make?
I wanted to pick a champion that I played well in the finals, and one that helped me a lot through my career. I thought of Camille, but she already had a skin from IG. Kennen has been with me for a long time, and he helped me big in the championship. I think I’ll be picking Kennen.
Lastly, a word to the fans?
I feel honored that we would be able to bring back LCK’s reputation. I’ll do my best next year so that we can get great results again.
