DAMWON Gaming claimed their revenge against G2 Esports in the semifinals of the 2020 LoL World Championship. With a 3-1 victory, DAMWON Gaming sent the LEC champions back home, including the shortest-ever Worlds game in game 4. G2 Esports had stood as the “LCK Killer” for the past two years, but DAMWON Gaming finally broke the curse and proceeded to the finals. After the match, DAMWON Gaming members gathered around to speak at the press conference.
(To ShowMaker) You've just claimed your revenge against G2 Esports and looking towards a final vs. Top Esports or Suning. How liberating was it to go through that? And how important was it since it felt as if G2 was the mental block you were wishing to overcome on your way to LCK's first Worlds finals since 2017?
ShowMaker: I feel good that we had revenge for last year. It also feels good that we kind of had revenge for the LCK since G2 always won against the LCK teams. As for the mental part, G2 was a team that’s really good at shaking up our mentality, so we really tried hard to stay focused. We’ll be playing against Suning or Top Esports, and I think it helped a lot to face them as well.
(To Nuguri) With your win today, it’s the first time in three years that we have an LCK team in the Worlds finals. How do you feel about that, and how has the LCK managed to go back to the season’s final game?
Nuguri: For the LCK, I feel proud that we made it to the finals, and I think it’s very positive for DAMWON as well. We learned a lot while we were winning. DAMWON Gaming’s coaching staff is really outstanding. Their ability to lead us is really good, so I think that had a big effect.
(Canyon) You will have to face SofM or Karsa in the finals. Who would you like to face? How do you think you’ll play against them?
Canyon: Both players have their strengths. Personally, I think SofM is trickier to face. I think there will be less pressure playing against Karsa. Moving into the finals, I’ll try to utilize my strengths and play well with my teammates.
(ShowMaker) Why did you use the LPL team emotes? How do you think tomorrow’s game would go?
ShowMaker: I flashed ‘18 IG and ‘19 FPX since they were both teams that beat G2. I think Suning and Top Esports are both great teams. I believe the team that’s in better condition tomorrow will make it to the finals.
(To Zefa) In game 2 today, DAMWON lost from the blue side for the first time since the summer split. Which side is more advantageous in the current meta?
Zefa: Actually in the current meta, there isn’t any side that has a clear edge against the other side. It depends on the champion pool. So we thought we would have the edge against G2 if we play on the red side, so we picked the red side. In the finals, it could depend on who comes up. It’ll be different depending on our champion pool and theirs.
(To Zefa) DAMWON excels at both teamfighting and macro. As the head coach, do you think this playstyle is the best playstyle for the given meta?
Zefa: Whatever the meta is, LoL is a game that has to be good in both teamfighting and macro.
(To Ghost) You joined the team this season and had great performances, contributing the team to get good results. What’s the reason that you were able to make such good synergy?
Ghost: With my teammates, they’re really good teammates so I didn’t feel any pressure. Also, it was all possible since the coaching staff led us so well.
(To Canyon) DAMWON will be facing an LPL team in the finals. It will be finals between Korea and China for the first time in six years. How do you feel, as the youngest member of the team, about making history?
Canyon: I didn’t know it was Korea vs. China for the first time in six years, but since the LCK made it to the finals, I’d really like to win and raise the Summoner’s Cup.
(To BeryL) Why did you pick Hail of Blades Braum? And how would you evaluate Mikyx’s performance on Pantheon in game 3?
BeryL: I wanted to take Domination, but there wasn’t anything that I could choose besides Hail of Blades. I wanted to take Relentless Hunter, so I had no choice. And Mikyx’s performance on Pantheon was alright. Pantheon is a champion that rots if he doesn’t get enough benefits in the early game. There wasn’t much he could do since he died too much. If he didn’t die in the dive, I think we would have fallen behind a lot.
(To Ghost) It’s your first Worlds. You did really well personally and as a team player. How do you feel getting here?
Ghost: Unlike my teammates, it took a really long time for me to get here. As much as I’m here at Worlds for the first time, I’m extremely happy that I made it to the finals. I really want to win the championship to make the LCK the strongest league again.
(To ShowMaker) Caps likes to utilize the map a lot. What did you prepare to deal with Caps’ roaming?
ShowMaker: I was aware that Caps likes to use the map widely, so whenever he disappeared, I made fast calls. I also tried to play champions that can catch up with his tempo.
(To Zefa) How do you feel about finally stopping G2 from being the nightmare for LCK teams?
Zefa: G2 is a team that prepares really well in terms of picks and bans and plays. They’re really good even when compared to other league teams. They did do well when they met Korean teams. This time, I feel really good that we were ahead of everything in terms of ability. And I’m also happy that we can finally stop people from framing them, "Korean Killer".
