After dominating performances over the past several international events, G2 Esports remains consistent, taking down Gen.G in a 3-0 sweep in the 2020 League of Legends World Championship quarterfinals. Beyond just a few troll moments, they outclassed and outplayed their opponents, making it to the semis yet again. With their dominant victory, they finish out this year's quarterfinals and will meet DAMWON Gaming in the semis for their rematch. After their series, G2 spoke with the global press to discuss their performance and upcoming match.

(To Perkz) Yesterday, you have mentioned that you have some unfinished business with Ruler since 2017. You have just played against him and grabbed the win. How do you feel now? And compared to the previous years, what is different in this year's G2?
Perkz: I think I kind of finished the business today. It was 2017, he kicked me out of Worlds. We lost 0-2 to Samsung in groups. Now we managed to beat him 3-0. It feels good. I feel that this year, we're just better than last year, and the year before as well. We play better as a unit, and we wait for each other more... [Laughs] Not too much more, but a little bit. We just play in general, better, and doesn't feel like that we get are lucky, it feels like we're just the better team, so that's pretty good.
(To Mikyx) Before last year's Worlds finals, you ranked yourself as the second best support. But this year, you have performed even better on stage. Do you think you're the strongest support at this Worlds 2020, and do you have any comments towards other support players at this Worlds?
Mikyx: Thank you for the question. Yeah, I do believe that I'm playing better than last year, but I don't think I'm the best at the tournament yet. I think Hylissang played really well this whole tournament. Judging from scrims, I think there's some players that are much better than me. I still have to play BeryL, which is a very strong support. After we beat them, we can re-visit this topic.
(To Perkz) You'll be facing DAMWON Gaming again in the semifinals. Do you have any words to DAMWON Gaming?
Perkz: Umm... [Laughs] I'm not entirely sure what I would tell them. I saw some interview with ShowMaker. He was talking about how he wants to beat G2, and how he wishes that we won against Gen.G. He doesn't care that there is like one LCK team in the finals, for sure. He wants to beat us badly. But, I feel sorry for LCK that they won't have an LCK team in the finals now.
(To Perkz) Did you expect that you would win 3-0 and how would you rate the team's performance today?
Perkz: I wasn't entirely sure if we were going to 3-0 today, because usually, when you go into best-of-fives, you don't entirely know how game 1's going to go. But as soon as we won game 1, I assumed we would go 3-0. I didn't want to get ahead of myself, because yesterday, Fnatic got reverse-swept. But usually, when we win game 1, we tend to play really well in the series. So it was a good start, lucky start today. I would rate our team's performance 8 out of 10. Maybe some things could be better, but I think in general, we did really well today. Just some small mistakes, of course, just some small draft changes, but that's just usual. [Laughs]
(To GrabbZ) Could you evaluate Gen.G's draft from today's series? Many Korean analysts said the result actually came down to the draft and the get-go. Could you also rate Bdd and Caps' performances today?
GrabbZ: I think the draft was optimal - which was also something that happens to me very often as my AD carry said. Also I think Gen.G as a team is not very adaptable. Especially, in a best of five, we knew what their approach was going to be, and that makes drafting a lot easier. Bdd and Clid, I think they're not very bad, but I think they just had a bad day. I don't think it reflects on their performance from this season. I think it's very regretful for them. I didn’t think we were going to 3-0 today, but DAMWON's going to be a bit harder for sure.
(To Caps) You gift LCK fans nightmares. Do you also think you're stronger especially up against LCK teams? If yes, what's the reason?
Caps: I think in the past, I had really good results against LCK teams. Especially last year, a lot of LCK teams were slow teams that were playing mainly for drakes and objectives. We were really creative, getting things on sidelanes or getting other form of leads. But in this meta right now, I don't think we really have that edge over the LCK teams. Every team kind of plays the same way right now. More or less, compared to last year at least. So I don't think we have the same edge against the LCK, but I still think we're a strong team regardless of meta, regardless of matchup. We'll just try our best regardless of an LCK team or LPL team, or if we had been up against another EU team. I think we can take everyone down.
(To GrabbZ) You dominantly defeated Gen.G today. But it's safe to say that your next opponent, DWG, is a step above Gen.G. With the level of play your team showed today, how are you feeling about the semifinals?
GrabbZ: Well, surely, I would say I'm pretty happy, besides game 3. But I think my players just had fun, making me lose hair. If we play like the first two games, we can, for sure, be a good opponent for DAMWON. Also, I'm really happy for our jungler, that we could show the fruit of our work, play around him. So now if we start hitting skillshots with Nidalee and Graves we might also 3-0 DAMWON.
All jokes aside, I think that - (looks to the side at Wunder, Perkz, and Jankos) there go our players making old man jokes - but, DAMWON for sure, will play very aggressive compared to Gen.G. Also DAMWON's mid-jungle will be very stronger than what Gen.G's mid-jungle showed today. It will be pretty explosive, I think. Draft can make a big difference, individual performance can make a big difference. I think it will be an exciting series, and I think it will go all the way to five games, and the better team, in the end, will win.
(To Jankos) G2 is considered the Kryptonite of the LCK. What played the biggest role in your win today? Was it the draft flexibility, better strategy, Caps difference, or was it something else?
Jankos: I think that today, we showed a pretty strong performance from every single player. I believe that Gen.G play all the champions, and we were much better playing around Caps than they were playing around Bdd. And of course, Caps was kind of smurfing. I also think we were just a better team. I think playing against DAMWON is going to be much tougher. I also don't believe in us being a Kryptonite of the Korean teams.
Last year, it was a different meta, where the LCK teams would not play out of champions and they had a very slow style. But this year, as Caps mentioned before, every style is kind of same, everyone is playing the same game, so it comes down to the better team and better players. I think we can beat DAMWON like we beat Gen.G today, but I do think that drafts would be stronger.
(To Wunder) You will face DWG - a team you knocked out last year - in the semis. Canyon said they have a better chance this time around because you look a bit worse than last year, whereas they have improved a lot and are a better team. What do you make of that, do you agree?
Wunder: Honestly, I haven’t put much thought into playing against DAMWON, because in my opinion we should just focus on ourselves for this week and then it depends on if Suning or Top ESports wins, and then we’ll start preparing for either of those teams. I don’t think DAMWON is really a threat to us. We usually beat all the Korean teams anyway, so that’s my take on it.
(To Caps) You had a really strong performance today, finishing up with a 14 KDA and were the player of the series. How do you think your series against DWG will play out compared to your matches against Gen.G today? Should we expect such a strong performance again?
Caps: I think as Jankos mentioned earlier, I think a lot of the meta means most teams play similarly. So I think even if we go against DAMWON and they have some picks they might not play and some picks they play differently than Gen.G, it’s probably going to be somewhat of the same matchups and gamestates. Obviously DAMWON is a much stronger opponent, but if we play our game well, and if we play even better than our game today, then I’m sure we can mirror what we did today and maybe even pull off a 3-0 next week as well.
